Personal Narrative: My Experience With Hurricane Sandy

Throughout my seventeen years of living in the United States, I honestly haven't traveled outside my home town much. One trip I was fortunate enough to experience was my church mission trip to New York to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2013. Going into this trip I didn't know what to expect. Would I be moved to tears or uneffected? What I did know was that this trip was going to be a completely new experience; like nothing I've ever done.
Our group stayed just outside the city for most of the trip and from there we traveled to our worksite everyday. My group’s work site was a woman’s house that had been flooded with about four feet of water. We tore down the damaged drywall and then put new drywall back up. We spackled, sanded, nailed and painted for about a week. Towards the middle of the trip we had guest speakers tell us about their experiences with Hurricane Sandy. There was one citizen who, through tears, recalled coming home to find his house in ruins. That was when it finally hit me about what had happened in that area. While working in my assigned house it was easy just to think of it as a piece of property, but after hearing this man speak about

Just being out and about in the city I learned something new. While walking down the street with millions of people I had to reach outside my comfort zone that I was use to at home. Navigating, asking strangers questions, not having my parents by my side were all out of the usual routine. Although it was scary at times, it was also fun and built up my confidence, made me better to handle a similar situation for the next time it happens. When in New York City I was exposed to new places, food, people; the whole just of the place worked differently than where I was from. That mission trip was one of the few times I've experience a new culture, and because of that I have a better appreciation for other cultures

As I was excitingly woken up by my brothers on Christmas, I ran downstairs to see what I had gotten. I opened my presents like I do every year, and got excited about them like every year, and then thanked everyone for my presents like every year. As we had just finished up opening presents, expecting no more, my mom told my brothers and I that there was one more present and got out her phone. Whenever my mom pulls out her phone, the family knows she’s about to record something or take pictures . So, my brothers and I cautiously looked at each other, deciding if we should get excited or not.…

I received a message as i swiped down my phone and viewed the text as a message from Conroe ISD stating “No School Tomorrow, Friday” I was so hyped up knowing that I didn't have to attend school the following day. Friday morning, nothing really happened I didn't really know why they canceled school as absolutely nothing happened that whole day.…

For hurricane Irma, I had to evacuate Cape Canaveral and go to my father's house in Ocala. I am very thankful I did because a tornado swept pass on the street across from mine, and many of my neighbors lost their roofs completely. My house had roof damage in the room I use as my art studio. There were some leaks which messed up some artworks in progress. I am thankful though that it is all the damage and not anything more because I know a lot of people went through a lot worse.…

Hurricane Irma has led to many devastating events in the Caribbean Islands. Hurricane Irma was a Category 5 storm when it crashed through the Caribbean, leaving a minimum of 36 people dead in its wake before moving on to Florida. "There's no food here. Should I go back to my ruined city, and help to rebuild it, or should I stay somewhere safe and try to move on? This painful dilemma was the question I faced in December 2005, when schools began to reopen after Hurricane Katrina. I made the choice to go back, and to teach some of the first high school students making their difficult way back to the city from wherever they had fled. It was an exhausting and stressful experience, but one that taught me so much—about resilience, innovation, and what even teenagers will put up with for the love of their home city. I arrived at O. Perry Walker High School on January 6, 2006—a Friday.…

When I got to Colombia and walked into the Suba Foundation for the first time, I was instantly met with loving hugs from smiling and genuinely happy faces and children saying “¡Te quiero!” meaning “I love you!” In the United States, I could not have imagined such a welcoming and accepting reception from people that had so little. Many children at the foundation lived in devastating poverty, hurriedly driven away from their homes due to the civil war in Colombia; yet they were filled with so much joy and love, it surprised me. My first missions trip to Bogota, Colombia really taught me what unconditional love meant, and drove me to return that love in every way that I could, whether it be by teaching English to the kids or washing 200 dishes…

There were many things that surprised me when watching the film. I was surprised that for being a city under sea level, and for being a place that has a high risk of hurricanes that there was no plan for a catastrophic event like Hurricane Katrina. Another thing that surprised me was the amount of time it took the Federal Government to come and send help to those affected by the storm. All of the dead bodies, all of the people that were struggling to find a way to survive, and the destruction of Katrina to the city all horrified me. The National Government, also know as the Bush Administration, did a terrible job at maintaining social order before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.…

When the hurricane finally ended, we climbed out of our tree and board covered basement to look at the world around us. For three hours the world had howled and groaned. I grabbed my little sister's hand and my mom's and we moved quietly down the silent street. Our neighbors, the Townsends had lost their roof and garage. It was eerie to see it standing next to the wreck of our house.…
