Personal Narrative: My Experience With ELL

Many people face struggles in their life time but my struggles were over the limit. One of my struggles was that I couldn’t speak English very well so I had to take ELL although the teachers tried to help me in ELL it was just different the way they were trying to help me it wasn’t the way I was used to in Pakistan. Starting junior year I no more had ELL and my grades got way better. So I always thought that ELL messed my grades up but, ELL did made my English a little bit better. Also the kind of people I met in ELL were the people who didn’t liked to get good grades and didn’t even wanted to come to school. First, when I had ELL I always thought that I was dependent on the teachers. Since I was dependent on the teachers I expected them to finish my homework just like how everyone thinks. The teachers tried to explain what my test was going to be on in ELL but the way how they explained was very different than Pakistan even in English. I always used to never study for any of my tests because I was dependent on my teachers and thought that they were going to help me with the tests. It was just because of …show more content…
They had different tests and with that you also have the tests for the other classes. Also, the level of English in Pakistan was very low. So I didn’t understand most of the things. Again I wasn’t used to switching classes every period because in Pakistan we all stayed in one class, and the teachers used to come to our class. Which I think is a smarter way making the teachers switch rather than making the students switch because there are a lot more students than there are teachers. I had to learn to switch classes so some teachers helped me by taking me to my next class. Then I memorized the way to my classes and the room numbers. The sad thing was that you get switched to different classes on certain days. For example when I had health on some days I didn’t go to gym

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

"Adversities can foster hope, and resilience. " This quote can be applied to many people's lives; points in their lives where they put out their best when they are faced with great challenges. I can apply this quote to my immigration from Kyrgyzstan to America. The reason I am describing this point in my life with this quote is because of the different adversities that have come with assimilating into a whole a new culture, country, and people. I first left for America with my family nearly a decade ago.…

Many Americans take school for granted. Some Americans would go as far as saying “school is lame”, or “I hate school”. In a society where going to an educational facility is mandatory, many of us have not experienced a lack of schooling. As American kids sit on their phones in school, Pakistani females struggle to get to school in an apocalyptic scene. Females in the middle east strive to get an education and have been impeded by the Taliban, a terrorist organization.…

Lea had never taken part in organised exercise. Back in her own world, she had been in good physical form, but it had been the result of her simple day to day life; she had spent most of her time in the air, flapping her wings, and many of the tasks that Ruber needed her help with involved physical exertion, usually at another person’s expense. Curiously, she peered around the room. The griffin had watched her master train his army back home, and some of the equipment resembled familiar objects; particularly the odd limbless dummies that stood on poles.…

In an English classroom- full of non-native speakers, being the only person along with a Lebanese American girl was dissimilar to a normal English class at high school. While sitting in a cold chair, my hands were sweating and shaking as the teacher instructed us heavy assignments that would overthink my brain out. On the blackish table, pencil scribbling and eraser marks are left on the worksheet. As I grasp to defeat my past middle school/elementary illiteracy, nothing really modify during 12+ years in the ELL program. However, there were crucial topics that were covered from the ELL classes- such as advanced vocabulary, reading out loud , and the most important of all is learning to write a high school essay.…

I learn the best when I am actually interested in the subject and when there is nothing distracting me paying close attention to what I need to know. I dont really learn by writing things down because I dont study so I dont look back at things I have written. Listening to hear is actually one of the ways I learn best because I do not like reading things I prefer listening to them for a better visualization. Visualizing things also helps a lot because sometimes picturing things in your head its easier to learn as well in my opinion. In class I work in the middle because its never fast or too slow when I work fast its because I feel the urge to finish as fast as possible and when I work slow its because I am not in the mood or I dont understand the work.…

I had never been a good writer, nor had I ever enjoyed writing, and the reality of being an ESL (English as a second language) student in high school only deepened the obstacle between me and writing. Besides adopting a language that I have never used in the majority of my life, I always had trouble in transferring my thoughts onto paper. When the former had been enhanced throughout taking ESL courses in eleventh grade, the latter had remained the same. I was simply unable to imagine how people could mentally process materials and rationally, smoothly reflect them in their essays. Sitting in front of my laptop and opening a brand new Word document, I read the assignment that I had no knowledge in over and over again.…
