Decent Essays
Since three, when I was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis, I have had on and off gastrointestinal issues. These issues reemerged at the beginning of my Junior year when it became impossible for me to ingest fluids orally. To compensate, I started going to the hospital two to three times a week for intravenous saline infusions. I miss around 20% of school and spend ten hours per week in doctor’s offices and hospitals; my family has also travelled to sites throughout the country to get second opinions. Last year I had to lighten my course load by dropping AP United States History, Anatomy & Physiology, and Spanish 4. To fulfill my history credit requirement, I am taking US History through BYU Independent Study. I have investigated options for

“Why I Chose Southwest” As a homeschooled high school senior, I am unable to take Advanced Placement courses, which are college-level classes taken at a high school. Students earn college credits by taking an exam at the end of the year. To remedy this, I decided to register at Southwest Tennessee Community College for dual enrollment classes. I chose Southwest for a multitude of reasons: to complete my high school education, to provide challenging courses in preparation for college, and to grant me college credit. I opted to take Pre Calculus, English Composition, and Anatomy & Physiology this semester.…

The beginning of my undergraduate career is not impressive and not worthy of holding the title of a PA. A student’s GPA is important in order to be accepted into a medical school or any other healthcare professional school, I was well aware of that, but I did not hold the maturity to excel in my academia. However, I’m grateful to realize my mistake halfway through my semester and searched for help to turn the downhill route my grades were taking. In attempts to remedy my subpar GPA, I added a second major to help with my overall GPA; however, I did not choose a major that would be considered easy, but I chose Psychology, a major that is challenging. It soon became evident of my success in throughout the rest of my undergraduate years.…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

As my summer progressed, I was also preparing for my upcoming volleyball season; when school began, I made the team, but I also began to broaden my horizons. In my first few months I became a member of Beta Club for my academic excellence, and I became a member of the Hosa Club in hopes of expanding my medical knowledge. In Hosa, I ran for office and was elected as our Historian and I learned that I possessed a hidden talent. Hosa provides a variety of medical events that begin at the regional level and gradually expand; I had the strange ability to memorize medical terminology. My life began to merge my regular activities with medical terms; when my volleyball team would workout in the weight room, I would sneak a stack of flashcards into room and study them in between reps.…
