Personal Narrative: My Experience With American Culture

Great Essays
Culture, a word that can be interpreted differently for everyone. To me it means, how you identify yourself by your beliefs, attitudes, relationships, anything that affects you, and how they have affected your life and what you take away from them. Currently everyone in my family is unaware of our cultural ties to other countries, so I personally identify my culture with American culture and with the things that affects my life. I have a complicated life that has shaped me into who I am today and some of those influences that have mainly impacted me is; my complicated family situation, lessons I’ve learned from soccer, and hard times with money.
A typical family, two parents, kids, and one house. A family like that is not a luxury I have ever

I lived with my grandma and after my dad graduated college, I spent half the time with him. This was regular for me, I never knew it any other way because as far as I can remember I lived with both of them, so that was not hard on me. Life continues on and my mom gets married, I move in with my mom and my new stepdad Bryce. This changes my life a lot no longer am I living with the “mom” that I grew up with in the environment that I had always known. “Mom, I want to move back in with grandma” I said every night in tears because I hated the change. “Lydia NO” my mom would scream back every night at me, she did not realize I thought of my grandma more of my mom at the time then i thought of her as my mom. Life moves on and I adjusted to the change, but still felt the most comfortable at my dad’s house because that was always a familiar place. It’s been years and I have come to be content with my life how it is and it gets all shook up again. My mom has gotten divorced. I was so young and before the divorce was official and my stepdad who I have grown to love had moved out I would sit in a ball outside their bedroom door crying as I …show more content…
I previously talked about my family situation and how my parents were in college when they had me, because of this they could not contribute to much towards me considering they were both full time in college and both paying for it on their own. Basically my sole funding came from my grandma who was divorced and could barely pay for the tiny house, the bills that came along with it, and keep food on the table. I was not really aware of what was going on at the time, but often we ate at neighbor’s house because the fridge was completely empty. As I became a little bit older and my dad now had a house, he would always have food at home. I would ask my grandma why, she just does not go grocery shopping and she would tell me that one day I would understand. My dad lived in a very tiny home in Westland but he was able to afford it because after he graduated, he got a job at Yazaki as a low level engineer. He did his very best to provide me with everything that I needed, although that did not always happen. Both my parents were out of college by the time I started kindergarten, but my mom was making practically nothing so she went back to school for nursing to try to give us a better life. When she married the first time we lived in a small condo in Canton, although it was not in the Plymouth-Canton district and neither was my dad’s house so we used my grandma's address

When I was little, I was raised by a single mother, which meant I wouldn’t see my mother that often because she was often working. She had to maintain five children and my father was never there to help my mother out. With a salary of eight dollars an hour, my mother had barely enough money to pay for all the utilities needed at home. Due to that, my sibling and I had very few clothes and toys for us, since we were a lot of children. My mother would safe my oldest sister’s better clothes and then gave the hand-me-downs to sister that best fit in them.…

Unlike many teenagers I didn’t, have a transition period from childhood to teenage years to adulthood, like so many others here in America might have. My life went from a carefree child to being a mature and responsible adult within a matter of months, and here is how it all started. The fact or the matter is that I was born in a refugee camp in Nepal and life wasn’t easy with death and disease looming everywhere. I roamed the streets as carefree as young kid could. Life was normal as I went to school every day, my dad worked countless hours, and my mother stayed home like so many other women in the community.…

Our lives are filled with so much adversity, yet, I always felt fortunate for what I had. As my parents fled Afghanistan to escape the Soviet invasion, they dreamed of a home where their children could avoid the terror they endured. Growing up, I was reminded of how fortunate I am by the stories of political strife and harsh conditions those in Afghanistan still endure. It led me to question why I deserve to be in this position while others in the world suffer. I saw as my parents were assimilating into American culture the barriers to basic needs they had to overcome.…

My expectations before participating in this activity was for it to not be as authentic as it was. I did not realize that there was a place downtown that had such real and good food and wondered why I haven’t heard of this place before. Also, I was surprised with the poverty I saw around the area. I have always grown up in areas that have a decent amount of money and have never been to a spanish speaking country or area before. This experience really opened my eyes to the fact that there are places out there that still have authenticity and still try to resist becoming “Americanized” in society.…

We live in a place where you have to pay almost $2 for school lunch but prisoners get it for free. We live in a place where a certain color gets blamed for everything.
