Personal Narrative: My Experience With Adapted Fitness Organization

Decent Essays
My experience working with the Adapted Fitness Organization, a fitness class for people with disabilities, as a whole has impacted me positively. My role is helping the clients with their fitness goals through many different means. I was nervous about volunteering for this organization because I had had little prior interaction with people with disabilities. The clients, all with physical disabilities, do not let anything stop them from continuing an active lifestyle. They participate in the Badger State Games and the Birkie, both sit-ski events they train for all year. The main things I learned were how to persevere in the face of challenges and that people are not defined by their disabilities. These lessons directly correlate to a career

In this course my fellow classmates and I had to complete 6 hours of volunteering at a local area, whether it was at a nursing home, food bank, or helping at a local organization. I took the opportunity to volunteer at the Frederick 4H Therapeutic Riding Program. This program offers individuals with disabilities to ride a horse in order to build their social skills, build their motor skills, and give them confidence. This organization states, “Our Mission is to encourage and provide Frederick County, Maryland citizens with medically certified mental, physical and/or emotional disabilities with equestrian activities to learn basic horsemanship skills, improve physically with better muscle tone, balance and posture; and improve their emotional…

Self- discloser, came to me when I was the manger/head personal trainer in one of the gyms I worked for. There was a young boy who wanted to get stronger and a little bigger, but he had a disability that he let get in his way of becoming stronger and bigger. He thought people would look and stare at him funny, this made him uncomfortable. His mom and dad tried to tell him to go for his goals, but he told them they did not understand what he was feeling, for they did not have a disability.…

I was able to not only make realizations about my own work there but about the children and I feel like it helped me grow so much more than I ever imagined it would at the start of my volunteering. In a larger aspect my volunteering has no real significance to the organization. As much I would love to boast my contribution to Equestrian I did nothing that any other person couldn 't do.…

Firstly the biophysical strengths that came from the application of the continuous method to my training program are as followed. The most obvious strength that came from this method of training is the enhancement of my aerobic energy system. Improving my aerobic system happened from the direct interrelationship it has from my physiological adaptations. During continuous training oxygen needs to supplied to muscles to avoid the build up of Lactic acid that would happen without the presence of oxygen. This aerobic process delivers oxygen to the muscles to break down fats, carbohydrates and proteins this produces the molecule ATP which is used as the main energy source, that allows my body enough fuel to be able to preform a continuous run…

Running from the Fitness Center, none of us expected to gain a teammate on our run. No one guessed that this teammate would unify us and solidify our brotherhood. After passing the Keeter Center on our long run, we slowed to decide where to run. “Misty Richards!” I howled, intending the comment to serve as a satirical joke.…

In high school I had a desire to go to Special Olympics, but when it came down to it, I did not have time and I did not know how to get involved. One day in Foundations of OT we talked about an assignment that we had to participated in which was Special Olympics. I was so excited because I have been wanting to for a very long time. On April 30, 2016 I drove to Westminster Christian Academy excited more than ever, wondering whom was I going to be paired with or if this athlete and I would click.…

Stepping into the gym on my first day of high school I was more nervous than any person could imagine. Me, a shy introvert wanting just to get in and out of high school and get to college, didn’t care for joining clubs or participating in after school activities. I walked into the brightly lit gym with bleach white walls and blue and green plastic bleachers and took a seat far away from any human life. Quietly keeping to myself I pulled out my phone and scrolled through Instagram pretending like I was doing something meaningful.…

My most memorable service opportunity was through Tower Guard, where I worked with the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD) to aid students with disabilities on campus. During my time in Tower Guard, I volunteered in a wide range of activities, including converting textbooks to accessible format, reading exams, and tutoring. Every day I was at the RCPD I interacted with a variety of people and built lifelong friendships. The stories and struggles I heard in discussions with the students and faculty at the RCPD built on my passion for medicine. Regardless of their physical abilities, the people at RCPD were overcoming countless challenges to succeed.…

My Workouts A few years ago, I first began to seriously lift weights. It started with light cardio, advanced to some dumbbell work, followed by crossfit training, and eventually progressed to heavy weight training and bodybuilding. I began relatively weak, but have gained thirty pounds over the last year and am now stronger than I have ever been. That being said, I am not the strongest man in the world. That being said, I am above average and happy with where I am, although I do plan to gain more strength through continued training in the future.…

I learned that it is good to have positive relationships with people and that I have to feed those relationships like a growing flower. To go places, I need to have a plan and set goals as well as meet them to get there. Another thing I learned in this book is that I have to be able to work with people in life to be successful, but that I also need to give myself a break. With everything that happens in this world, it is important for me to do my best at everything to try and make a difference. That everything starts here at high school.…
