Personal Narrative: My Experience With AP Calculus

Improved Essays
The moment I walked into the classroom, an uneasy feeling had come over me. This was the first year that the school had offered AP classes, and I knew that this particular course would be challenging, but the teacher had given me comfort. Confidence, that I belonged here. The confidence, even if the AP Calculus class was not what I particularly wanted to take for my senior year curriculum, had never felt more reliable. Throughout the year, there was material that my brain couldn’t comprehend and I shut down because of it, truly believing that I wasn’t capable of handling the mathematics. Even to this day, instances occur where I have doubts about the content in the course. I never completely surrendered to the pressure within, and worked hard

Junior year, I took Geometry while everyone was in Pre-Calculus. Even though I didn’t have enough time to catch up to the rest of my class, I still tried. Over the summer, I took Algebra II at my local community college and passed, thus I was able to enroll in Precalculus during Senior year. Although I wasn’t able to take Calculus during my senior year, I was still content with the fact that I tried and as far as I could. I was happy with where I was.…

I, along with my peers, enrolled in Calculus I, differentiation, that spring. I saw some of my classmates struggle on the tests and quizzes, and I wondered why them and not me. I realized that differentiation required a lot of algebra, and I had mastered algebra from my college algebra course. However, my classmates who struggled…

I watched as the faces of my scholarly peers averted their gaze, as if to mourn my loss, and the teacher looked on in disgust. At that moment, I swore that I would always regret taking AP physics. I would have never guessed that not even a year later, I would have come to be eternally grateful for a painful year of failures and embarrassment.…

An AP course is associated with strenuous amounts of homework on difficult material where worthy students take part to earn college credit. Now, one course is difficult enough to manage, but multiple courses are impossible to manage. As a result, students that are loading multiple AP courses, 3 or more, are being overworked. The effect of overworking students is counter intuitive to the objective of AP courses, in which they want to challenge the student to help them excel. However, students won’t be working at their full potential if their constantly being bombarded with extremely difficult tasks (Matthews).…

Going to school for about 180 days of my entire 365 in a year for 13 years of my life has unquestionably taken a toll on my brain. From Monday to Tuesday to Wednesday to Thursday to Friday attending class every single week. This process begins to become tedious beyond belief. For some, this process becomes unbearable and the solution for them is either test out or just drop out. However as tedious as a school has become, I stumbled upon a new area of interest that reignited my thirst for knowledge: psychology.…

During the time of my years that I have lived, I have not faced any challenges that were harder academically than taking AP classes. Throughout my years I have faced challenges like riding a bike, walking on my own two feet, or driving a car, but nothing like taking your first AP classes in the senior year. Throughout high school, I kept it out of the way that I would ever take honors or AP classes, but here I am now taking my first AP classes. As now being in the middle of the first 6 week grading period, I have overcome the challenge by doing better on focusing a lot more on school work and not procrastinate and also giving up on certain things like not spending too much time on games lower all the fun activities at a minimum which benefited…

As my day progressed, I could only focus on math. My palms were sweating and shaking as I walked into Mr. Jones’s portable. Nervously, I sat down at a desk directly facing Mr. Jones and for half an hour, I discussed with him about my past math experiences, and the problems that could come with moving up in math. Once we finished discussing, he explained that he wrote some practice problems for me to solve. He handed me a sheet of white paper with a single problem written on it, “graph (x-3)2(x-1)(x+2)”.…

Sitting in a hard plastic chair in my math class I felt paralyzed. The heat in the room was unimaginable on the cool autumn day. I could not be the only one that was feeling it. At the same time I could barely keep head straight as the math test stared back at me with harsh eyes telling me “you will never be able to pass this class,” in a slithering tone. A drop of sweat rolled down the side of my face.…

I was assigned to work together with Lisa Adamson and Katie Doherty. My group and I were in charge to teach chapter eight sections four and five. Chapter eight section four was about functions, and chapter eight section five is about coordinate system. Surprisingly, our group previously taught a lesson of a fifth grade math class, and our sections tied into teaching up to the middle and high school level. I enjoyed these sections and I will discuss how I felt working as my group and how I individually performed.…

One challenge I've experienced during my pursuit in engineering and my education as a whole has been AP Calculus AB. Considering I've had high grades in previous maths, I assumed that calculus would not be a problem. However, those previous classes could not have given me a sense of what a college level math class would be like, which I learned very quickly. Calculus has been a surprising taste of what college learning is like. I now know that much of the learning is going to be one's own responsibility.…

Three years into my high school I hadn't gotten into the state of mind that most over achievers have. I had floated through high school thinking I was trying my very hardest to get good grades and become a consistently studious candidate of my school. However, no matter how hard I tried I failed I gave into all the distractions and used all my obstacles as excuses became frustrated and developed an attitude problem that I had created myself. Being a consistent 2.5 student wasn't satisfying or inspiring. Uniquely enough, I had decided to take challenging courses my junior year.…

My initial response to watching the video, Why Students in the US need Common Core, was a deeply emotional sigh. As I mentioned in my previous paper, my experiences with math have been marked with what I call damage to my math psyche. In relation to this course, I have yet to have that “aha” moment in which all of learning has connected. Jo Boaler points out, students, including myself, have been conditioned to think of math as a performance goal, not a learning skill. This is deeply imbedded in me.…
