Personal Narrative: My Experience With A Place To Turn

Improved Essays
For my RISE project, I would like to work on hunger in Massachusetts with an additional interest in hunger in children. I first started working with hunger in seventh grade with my advisory. Since then, I’ve taken a new initiative and began volunteering at A Place To Turn during my free time. Last year, I set up a food drive for them and was able to collect over three hundred items of food. This year, I am hoping to continue with these food drives and collection drives on a larger scale.
I know a lot of my classmates are aware of the issue of hunger and want to help, but didn’t have the chance to. By having a more formal and structured group, I would be able to give other students the opportunity to help behind-the-scenes and directly through collection of drives and such. My plan is to have multiple food, toiletries and clothing drives throughout the year in many different parts of the community. By doing so, I would be able to offer multiple leadership opportunities to those who don’t have enough time to run an entire RISE group.

I believe it is a right for everyone to have access to food, clothing and toiletries to take care of themselves. I enjoy working with APTT because they offer their services to people in the metrowest area who already go to town food pantries but need additional help. Clients go in once every two months and choose the food they want, the clothing they want and children can get toys, books and birthday presents. Most of the clients at APTT are single mothers who have young children and cannot support themselves. My specific interest in helping children comes from my belief that all children start with the same potential, but some have to work harder than others. I don’t believe hunger should stand in the way of a bright

Hunger in America is a great problem but it can be prevented and eradicated as long as the nation has the will and determination to make it happen both on a national scale. In America alone, statistics prove that one in every six individuals face hunger on a regular basis. Although there is an astonishing amount of people who face hunger, this is not because there is an insufficient supply of food available in the country, but it is because many individuals are living in poverty or below the poverty line. Rosie, a young fifth grader living in Colorado, is one of millions of children who face hunger as a result of poverty. Rosie is dependent on neighbors and friends, food stamps, numerous charities and organization and relies on any other resources that can aid her in obtaining a sufficient amount of food.…

My project goal is to ensure every student has a meal to celebrate with for a Thanksgiving dinner this year. I have been in contact with local shelters and supermarkets in my town. Through contact with them, I will be able to provide each family with a holiday meal: a ham, vegetables (including green beans and potatoes), macaroni and cheese, rolls, and other canned goods. The outpour of support to help me achieve my goal has been amazing. I plan to continue this project every year and make it a tradition at Coosa High School.…

WIC is another program that supports mothers who struggle daily to insure their young children never go hungry. Lastly, there is The National School Lunch Program that allows students to get a healthy balanced meal at free or reduced prices every day. However, even with all these government programs food insecure households are still not able to live a healthy life style because they are forced to choose unhealthy foods over healthy ones because it is what all they can afford to buy. Food insecurity will not go away but it is our responsibility to see the struggle of millions that is taking place in our own back yard and reach out to…

Feed my starving children is a non-profit organization that packages food to send to malnourished children in several countries. These sustainable meals are made specifically to pack as many nutrients as possible to help nourish and strengthen the children so they can be healthy and conquer their fight against starvation. When most people think about global hunger they think of a lack of production of food in developing countries, however, it’s more than that. Global hunger encompasses not only food production and security, but also distribution and access. Feed my starving children distributes their packed food to about 70 countries which gives children in these countries access to food that otherwise would not be there.…

Hi, John I really enjoyed reading your discussion board this week, you have chosen a very good non-profit organization to discuss this week. As great as our country is and the abundant resources we have, it’s hard to believe that hunger is still a major issue in this country. But feeding is an organization that helps feed individuals and families that would contemplate where their next meal was going to come from. The concepts you touched upon in your discussion board are very important and vital to the organizations success. In addition to the concepts you already have discussed, also another important concept would be staff performance and accountability.…

Health inequalities perpetuate from lack of public policy ensuring communities have access to healthy food, as well as corporations exploiting the health of people by pricing healthy food as more expensive than processed food. Food injustice is a prominent issue within many communities, because most low-income households struggle to pay rent, and don’t have the privilege to afford healthy food. However, some organizations seek to tackle food injustice, by providing people who suffer from the negative impacts of food desserts with a means to transform their lives through connecting with the land. I have volunteered with several organizations, and throughout my experiences I realized reaction and commitment from the community members are affected…

According to the USDA Household Food Security, in the United States 16.2 million kids in America struggle with hunger. Child hunger is an everyday issue that many of us are not aware of, but should be. We have all heard the phrase “No child should ever go to bed hungry,” and that is a phrase I strongly believe in. As a child, I grew up in Columbus County, where 22% of the population is food insecure (Hunger Research, 2013). In my community, many of the children whom I attended elementary school with lacked the funds for food and other necessities.…

Introduction The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines food insecurity as “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways. ”1 Nearly 12% of people living in Virginia are considered food insecure, and these rates are even higher in the southeastern portion of the state. The cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth have food insecurity rates close to 19%.2 Many of these individuals are children, and the effects of childhood hunger are often detrimental on a child’s development. Their growth may be hindered, academics may suffer, and overall well-being may be compromised.…
