In this paper, I will be summarizing the information from this week’s reading. Additionally, from this week’s reading I will provide examples of how the content applies to my personal spiritual journey. Lastly, I will provide my ideas of how this week’s reading will apply to my future human services career. This week’s reading included chapters nine and ten from the textbook, “Religious and Spiritual Aspects of Human Service Practice” written by James W. Ellor, F. Ellen Netting, and Jane M. Thibault (1999). Religious congregations are described as groups of people that come together for religious purposes.…

In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

After spending the first month of my summer playing video games, eating junk food, and binging Netflix shows, I wanted to do something fun while also helping the community. Brainstorming ideas, my mom recommended volunteering at a senior center. While I was not interested at first, I wanted to try new experiences as much as I possibly could. The next day, we went to the Forsyth Senior Center and an old gentleman greeted us with extreme kindness. Asking about any volunteer opportunities at the center, I imagined helping with bingo.…

As I entered my senior year of undergrad, I began looking for an opportunity to work with people requiring any form of health care assistance. Luckily, I came across an opening for a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) position in the school newspaper. At the time, I didn’t know exactly what a PCA was, but I knew I wanted to work one-on-one with patients, and this job would allow me to do exactly that. After I went through all the training that was required, it was finally time to meet my client. The only details my supervisor told me about my client were: his name, that I would be assisting in driving him around in his handicap accessible van, getting him dressed, monitoring him during his walking exercises, and that he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy as a child and was bound to a wheelchair.…

I am interested in a position in residence life because I admire the vial role residence life plays in the Monmouth College community. The impact that residence life has is far beyond the residence halls. They behavior they teach and encourage extends to the way students behave on campus and off campus. Being apart of an intricate system like this appeals to me because with the role I would play as an RA would would have an impact on more than just the people in my hall. I believe that the role of an Resident Assistant is to make sure residents feel comfortable, welcomed, and most importantly safe.…

Exciting story to draw in audience and transition as to why this sparked my interest in becoming a PA. Imagine waking up one morning and looking into the mirror only to see an unrecognizable, aged face. You are in a foreign house with strangers surrounding you. This experience was an attempt to understand dementia after discovering a late uncle had the condition and was kept secret due to fear of the stigma. Early exposure as a companion highlighted the unpleasant side of long term care. Unpredictable movements and vocalizations frightened and pushed me from my comfort zone, however working with teams of dietitians, nurses, musicians, and artists provided invaluable practical experience and a chance to learn appropriate care for those in vulnerable positions. In particular, this experience aided me in developing lesson and unit plans for high school students as part of an interdisciplinary team while strengthening my own contributions. Within my siblings, my sister, brother and I are all in the Army reserves and this alone brings out a lot of stressors in the family. At first it was very difficult during most of the transitions in changing of family member roles when we all joined. We all became closer for the fact that we were all going through the same thing. My mother was always at home whenever we needed anything and never hesitated. She was very positive and when we vented over anything, she reassured us that it was not much longer until we came home.…
