Personal Narrative: My Experience Of Working With Children

Decent Essays
Over the summer I worked at St. Margaret of Scotland Early Learning Center in order to obtain my service hours. I learned several things about working with children from this experience. One of the, things that I learned was about being firm when speaking to children when they misbehave , but at the same time, being gentle with the children in the school. When I was working with the children I had to be firm with them in order to keep them from misbehaving. Being firm means that I was asserting myself and I was letting them know what they were doing was wrong. For example, one child was misbehaving and one of the volunteers tried talking gently to him, but since she wasn't firm enough the child continued misbehaving. If I wasn't firm enough

My interest in child poverty persistence dates back to my childhood. Growing up in Liberia and acclimating to America as a first generation refugee, I can assuredly communicate the difficulty experiences of children from impoverished families. In Liberia, I lived in a two-bedroom tent with 10 relatives, we owned nothing and when a civil war arrived, we lost families and the tent. While coming to America, two out of the 14 relatives that applied were selected from the immigration process. My father, grandfather and I came with the clothes on our backs.…

I was ten years ago and I can still vividly remember sitting on an old, wooden rocking chair while the words of The Very Hungry Caterpillar trembled off my lips to a room full of second graders. I can recall the eagerness and excitement that filled their little faces as I flipped from page to page. There was an abundance of curiosity and desire to learn in that classroom that made me happy that I decided on skipping recess to read to the younger students. There was a fire that lit in my ten-year-old body that day. That was the day where I finally had an answer to all the “What do you want to be when you grow up?”…

14.7 million children live in poverty. I am one of them. And yet, no one seems to notice me or care. I’m just another piece of garbage in the street, just another thin, starved child that is above the notice of anyone. I wish tears could change my life, as if they could somehow wash out the hurt, and pain, as if they could drown the struggle.…

There she sat, waiting for something. The girl in the little white dress that would match the color of her smile, had she ever dared to show it, was just sitting there. Waiting. What she was waiting for was not apparent. Her sky-blue eyes seemed to be searching for something, and her fragile, childish hands looked longing to touch something.…

Katie, I can also relate because when I first started my childcare business, I fell on some hard times and needed some assistance to make ends meet. However, I was denied because my status was self-employed. I then had to keep my faith and know that this was just temporary. After five months, my center was full to capacity and had a waiting list. The whole Human Resources Administration is a double standard.…

The Person I have chosen to write this forum on is my mother. I grew up in a home where her parenting style was very authoritative. This has strongly made an impact on my life and how I am perceived by my friends and others. My mother was very consistent with boundaries however; she was always open to discussion. My mother had furthered her education in child and family services and therefore, implemented many skills in our home.…

"Miss Jan, Miss Jan," the excited voice shouted over the noise of the crowded mall. My sister and I turned around to see a boy, probably around twelve years old, racing toward her. My sister called him by name, gave him a hug and asked him what was going on in his life. They talked as if they knew each other well. He and his mother chatted with my sister for some time before they left.…

The school I chose to visit is Child Development Services (CDS) Head Start I met with Sheryl Grasmick who is the center manager. She shared many of the safety procedures with me the first thing that is noticed when entering in to the school there is a key pad in the front entrance that a code has to be entered for the door to unlock the floor is tile and there are runner mats for when the weather is bad so students and parents don't have to walk on wet tile. Sheryl said they have fire evacuation, severe weather/tornado procedure and lock down procedures in place that all employees have been trained on as well as they do drills on a monthly basis to keep the students aware of the proper procedure. For the fire evaluation students are required to line up walk outside along the playground fence and line up along the back of the fence and stay there as their teacher calls attendance to make sure all students are accounted for once they are the teacher holds up a green card showing all are safe and accounted for, there is also a white card with a red cross showing paramedics are needed or a red card, meaning not all are…

As someone who has never cared for an infant before, being placed with those group age was an unfamiliar thing to me. Primitively, I had no idea how to interact with infants because I couldn’t decipher them, and they couldn't decipher me (communication barrier). There is the difference in learning things in the classroom and actually being in it (physically involved), for that reason, In the beginning, I had difficulties in fitting in and the children had their own difficulties in excepting an unknown person into their personal space. However, everything changed as I became comfortable in that environment and that transitioned into my interaction with the children.…

For as long as I can remember I’ve been going to church. Starting off I went to church to go to Royal Rangers, but I didn’t see much past that. Going to Royal Rangers built the foundation of what my relationship with God would be today, but it wasn’t until about ninth grade that I would actually begin to take my relationship with God seriously. In ninth grade, just like every other high schooler, I began to look for a way to get community service hours…

When our Natalie was born, almost 4 years ago, I was working full-time and enjoyed working, but before she was even here, I knew that I wanted to spend more time with her. I was able to get my employer to agree to my working only 4 days a week (Fridays off) so that I could spend the other 3 days with my daughter. The discussion husband and I had regarding childcare revealed that we would both be more comfortable if she were cared for by family. Plus, we wouldn’t be able to afford a full-time daycare.…

Within my siblings, my sister, brother and I are all in the Army reserves and this alone brings out a lot of stressors in the family. At first it was very difficult during most of the transitions in changing of family member roles when we all joined. We all became closer for the fact that we were all going through the same thing. My mother was always at home whenever we needed anything and never hesitated. She was very positive and when we vented over anything, she reassured us that it was not much longer until we came home.…

The psychology club occurred on Wednesday evening at five p.m. and was located in the Brick Yard. I wanted to become a member of this club, because, I believe that psychology is important toward the development of my students in the future. Since this is my freshman year, I wanted to discover clubs that I found fascinating to possibly join. Before I attended the meeting I was sort of nervous about what the club may have been like.…
