Personal Narrative: My Experience In Simon's Marketplace

Improved Essays
On a blazing hot Summer morning, I hesitantly got out of my car and shuffled my feet into Simon's Marketplace. This was the location of my soon to be summer job and today was my first day. Upon entry, I talked to one of the men in charge and he directed me into the kitchen where I would be spending basically all of my time from now on. I had been given the opportunity to work as a prep cook for a local eatery but in all honesty, I misinterpreted the qualifications necessary for this position. Along with the feeling of doubt I had, I also carried an assortment of knives into the kitchen. Initially, I was asked to bring my own since the business lacked extra utensils. Little did I know that my personal knives were not what my coworkers were looking for. I emptied my bag of utensils onto the prep counter. My boss glanced at the miscellaneous blades set in front of me and responded with, “Those are steak knifes.” …show more content…
This certainly wasn’t the first impression I was hoping for. Despite this major sign that I wasn’t knowledgeable in the kitchen, my coworker still gave me my first task: peel and chop an onion. It seemed like such a simple task but in reality it felt like rocket science to me. I was already low in confidence and could not operate effectively after the steak knife incident. So as you can assume, I failed to successfully do as I was told. And so, for the rest of the day, I was given the simplest of tasks as well as assigned to wash dishes; the lowest position in the kitchen hierarchy. When the time finally came for me to clock out, I felt like a failure, contemplating if it was worth coming back after such a dreadful first day. How could I possibly step foot in this place again after such a poor first

In the article “Fantasies of a Happier Kitchen” Chef Rene Redzepi describes his earlier days of what it was like to work in a cutthroat kitchen; which involved nothing more than stern discipline and humiliation, this was part of his day to day regimen. Dictatorship over leadership ruled at his restaurant, where lines were always crossed. One particular incident mentioned in the article describes a moment where he verbally abused one of his employees. His sous chef, one of his closest allies advised him to change his ways and that’s where he began to see things in a different light.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

When chefs are constantly working fast, unexpected incidents often happen but chefs are expected to continue through these times. In the kitchen, physical health problems do not serve as an excuse to stop cooking. Dixon describes an incident that occurred in the kitchen when he burned himself: “[I] reached for a new pan and pulled it toward me. It had been out of the oven for barely sixty seconds. I felt a sensation that I described later as being “blue” and a scream run from my fingers up my arm.…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

Hours and hours of extensive research and planning went into this moment in time. Dim lights from the hallway protruded into my bedroom, and an eerie silence echoed through the crevices of my house as I imprinted my head deep into my sweaty palms. Scrolling imperceptibly down the page of my Charles Schwab account, I found myself gliding the cursor over a large green button that displays the word “trade”. My heart pulsated violently as I clicked on the left side of my mouse and selected the buy option. It brought me to a remote and exotic new territory, like a sailor navigating uncharted waters, and opened a new page, with various options to select from.…
