Personal Narrative: My Experience In Middle School

Improved Essays
Contrary to the experiences of a multitude of my peers, my middle school experience was, for the most part, positive and beneficial. Not to imply that I enjoyed middle school more than Elementary School, but during middle school, I met new people, tried new things, and branched out socially. Eighth grade especially was when I was shaped more into the person I am today, more so than any other grade in middle school. A significant part of my Eighth grade was not only branching out socially, but branching out musically. Prior to the beginning of the school year, I began to receive drum lessons. I am still taking these lessons, as I have found something soothing, yet invigorating in drumming. This is also the year that I began listening to music much more, but not current pop music. I’ve listened to numerous amounts of 70s and 80s songs mostly. The only thing close to pop music that I listen to is music that was popular in 2010. When listening to this music, I found that one of these songs seemed to represent my eighth grade year almost perfectly. This song is Some Nights by fun.
Some Nights is a song that paints a picture of a man who’s figuring out what he wants, what he believes, and who he is. It is about rejecting the barriers and the “norms” that society creates.

This year, I have been trying to figure out what kind of a person I want to be. I wasn’t really sure at the beginning of the year, but I did know one thing. I was not going to be someone who blended in with the crowd. I wanted to do my own thing, because trying to fit in when you were never meant to fit in doesn’t work. “Believing the hype” is quite overrated, and doesn’t push one’s self to be their own person. Some people couldn’t accept that I was comfortable with being my wacky, quirky self, so they tried to “jack my style”. Thankfully, I never let them, or else I wouldn’t have turned into the unique person I am

It quickly went from a nice, fun, vacation to a painful, terrible, nightmare. From my personal experience, when I was in elementary school I remember my teacher would let us sit on yoga ball it always helped me concentrate and it helped me when I was really active because I could not move around, it will make me fall if I move around. I like the idea of standing desks because I prefer standing a lot but when I need to I could sit down on the tool, but I could still move my legs around and be somewhat active. So if one day you're feeling antsy you can just stand. Also I think if your tired it could help you stay awake. Mark Benden also states that sitting desk can cause kids to be obese, he also says that too much sitting is bad for your health.…

Long ago, I had moved to a new school and none of the popular kids accepted me because I have always been myself, which I suppose is different than most individuals. But I was happy being the person I was meant to be. I always thought, this is the person the universe wanted me to be, and I have never changed for anyone since then, and today have many wonderful friends who appreciate me. This is prime to realize because had I conformed to what the popular kids wanted me to be, I would have never been the unique individual with the wonderful friends I have today. I have a burning passion for skating, and the skating culture is very distinct on the way they dress and behave, but I had always stuck to what made me feel comfortable, and I personally feel a connection to the world being who I naturally am.…

One thing I can always remember any of my instructors saying was, “Practice how you perform,” which is always relevant in anything you do. After my three years in middle school was done, high school came around, and it was a real step forward. Marching Band one semester and Concert Band the next semester. This is when things changed immensely. I met so many people that were willing to help others grow as musicians and people, I can remember looking up to many people, searching for the best ways to improve.…

This personal narrative is going to be about the first day of Middle School and my experiences as a 6th grader. It is going to go after my emotions and other descriptive details of the first day. I still remember how the seat belt felt tightening across my chest as the car got closer to the Middle School. During that time I knew nothing about being in a big school because the biggest school i've been in was yankee ridge. (Which is really small).…

It was the second week middle school when my band teacher had asked for me to stay after class: “Rachel you should think about quitting the band.” At that moment, I had felt my mind go blank; I was devastated. I had always known I was a bit behind in learning the notes and developing the sound of my tone; however, I had never once thought about quitting band. I loved music; just turning on the radio brightened my mood. I felt impatient in my other classes, waiting until I could go and pick up my instrument.…

When I was a freshman, I joined marching band. Marching band taught me some very helpful characteristics that I started applying to my life. It taught me responsibility, people were relying on me more than I’d ever experienced. It taught me commitment, I had a job to do and I had to be committed to doing that job to the best of my ability or I’d be letting down myself and those around me. Most importantly, I learned confidence; I had always been shy and introverted until I was able to break out of my shell through marching…

Though middle school taught me everything I needed to learn about music at the time, high school is the reason I’m writing this paper. Entering ninth grade as a five-foot-three biology know-it-all, Steve Conley, my current band teacher, introduced me to marching band. It’s some of the best fun I’ve had in a long while. The past two years of marching band have influenced to me to lead the band rather than just play. I want to be drum major.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

In the seventh grade, I faced a large transition in life. The previous year I had experienced middle school for the first time, but I would make that entrance again. I moved from Texas to North Dakota, where seventh grade was the first year of middle school. I took on those same fears and hopes that I had faced before, but in an unfamiliar place where I had no one except for family to give me support. I tried a lot of new things that year, mainly wrestling.…

Freshman Retreat I gazed around me at the full room. Sitting on the most uncomfortable hard cement surrounded by other freshmen and some seniors, we attentively waited to see what they were going to have us do that day. At the beginning I was nervous because a lot of people said that I would most likely cry and I didn’t know what they would have us do that would make us cry. The morning of September 17,2015 we met in the commons and loaded the buses.…
