Much of my attention is directed at advising students and ensuring students take the appropriate courses so they graduate on time. The second arduous job related function of my job involves keeping students engaged in the coursework and not quit because they feel the work is difficult. This is a real concern, which affects completion rates if students become disinterested in some aspect of the Criminal Justice curriculum. Additionally, for the online students, I provide them the first day of class my office hours, phone number, and offer them the opportunity to stop by the office, or call me so I will not be an unknown face teaching online courses but a real person that they have met in person or corresponded with over the phone. Likewise I meet with those in class and offer encouragement as well as offer counseling sessions to students who seem to be struggling and need help. I regularly use Starfish and keep online as well as in class abreast of excessive absences or low grades in which they need to bring up. Additionally, I use Star-fish to provide positive support and praise for those students that are excelling and progressing well. This type of recognition provide the students with self-confidence and the assurance their hard work is not going unnoticed. Some students who were failing are passing now as a result of these efforts. I frequently take time during class to help students register for the next semester to ensure the students stay motivated and not lose interest. I regularly promote the college at my church, and have an engagement this summer to speak at a neighborhood watch meeting to promote the many opportunities the college offers the surrounding

I agree with your post. I also felt that with each state having a myriad of laws that aren’t necessarily congruent with other states, let alone the federal government, would make it difficult if not impossible to have a single court. Therefore, with the way our system is set up, it is a necessity to have a multi-tiered court. When looking at the downside, I hadn’t contemplated the fact of jurisdictional conflict.…

I was so shocked as I was taken to be put in the back of the police car to be driven to a local jail by the police after the party. I started trembling on the way unable to process what had happened. Previously I only had spent a few minutes at the party and didn’t realize my friends wanted me to go a party with drugs and alcohol. Upon arrival at the prison there were tall electric fence that surrounded the premises. On the top of the fence I was able to see the vividly sharp barbed wire at the top that was there as extra protection to make sure no one could escape.…

It is 7:23 a.m. on a Thursday morning, the pass allowing tardiness to first hour is tucked away in my tattered blue backpack. I sit in my car gazing at the quiet building. I have seven minutes to make it up the staircase, adorned with two lamp posts. I, along with many others, have visited Morgan Federal, the bank across the street, countless times and never realized just what was in the vicinity. A friend who works next door in the courthouse suggested I profile this place and gave the directions: “It’s in the old jail,” as if that was a common reference automatically understood.…

I have a confession to make, I enjoy the practice of Criminal Defense. As a criminal defense attorney, I represent those charged with a crime, whether it's traffic, DWI/DUI, misdemeanor or felony. As per the explanation I have heard from many people, I defend the 'scum of the earth.' Since deciding this was my area of practice as an attorney, I have heard from friends, family and even total strangers that my chosen profession is 'wrong,' 'despicable,' I've even been told what I do is "what's wrong with America. " I try to have a legitimate discussion with these individuals to explain my decision to practice criminal defense.…

Even though it was basic, I still had a lot of fun pretending I was on a jury and seeing the simple set up of a trial.…

This is a true story about the time I got in trouble for doing something that would have marked my record with a felony and got me put in a juvenile detention center for 3-6 months. I'm sitting there taking it all in and making sure I show him how regretful I am for doing what I did. At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…
