Personal Narrative: My Experience In Connecticut Cheerleading

In New Fairfield, Connecticut cheer was everything. Almost every girl in town did Falcon cheer. There were times when missing practice was equivalent to death. During my last year of cheer with the Falcons I was a Jr. Midget, the last team before high school. This particular year there were two Jr. Midget teams, black and red, both of which had the same cheer coaches. I was on the black team, which was considered the lowest ranking team of the two. We were seen as the bottom or the throw aways that could not make the cut. However, we showed them wrong by making our way to the top no matter what anybody said, but getting there and winning was not easy. There were a lot of fighting, long practices, and no belief in our capabilities by the coaches, …show more content…
The only way for us to win is to practice and get better with each practice. Our practices were long and grueling, just to get as much as we could into our two minute and thirty second routine. We were not allowed to miss practice so when people got sick they were still required to attend practice. They were wrapped in a blanket shivering in the scarcely heated gym where the team practiced. Injuries were also a big risk in cheer from knees to the back we all had pains. I was not the worst injured, but I was still up there in the top five. The tendinitis in both my ankles was the worst. I had to wear two huge braces on both my ankles or I couldn’t cheer. My weariness also extended to my head because the previous January I had received a minor concussion while practicing with my winter all star team when they had dropped me from a stunt I had been flying …show more content…
None of us went to the parks that day, but still had fun at the Music Hotel, where we were staying. Not even darkness could keep us down so we journeyed over to Downtown Disney for dinner and a little shopping.
It was a lot of fun, but sadly it had to end the next day. Time for some practice. Our practice time was somewhat in the middle of the day around 2pm, but we still practiced our routine with no stunting on the hotel courtyard beforehand. The hotel was filled with other cheer teams from around the country so no one really minded. We were dressed identicaly in our wind pants and matching jacket with our hair on top of our heads being curled in rollers so they would be perfect tomorrow. The practice did not go well and our coaches knew that. Everyone except the parents thought we were not going to

During practice we worked in a group with the individuals and the bond that was developed helped the athletes in opening up and becoming comfortable around the coach, volunteers, and other family members. Each athlete was given a chance to call out the cheer to start and was encouraged to be loud during the duration of the cheer. Positive reinforcement was used with smiles, good vibes, and kind words which was a reflection on how the athletes performed in practice and at…

Practices were grueling, hot, tiring, but we got better. Our team that year had at least 35 players. Thats a lot compared to all the other teams who barely had 20. Since I played all game long it was harder for me. At practice we would start with our warm ups.…

The time spent on the practice field was for moments like these. With our backs against the wall, we had to put up a fight against four other teams. And that was just to make it to the championship game. Not only were we the underdogs, we were the youngest team in the tournament. We won the first game, then the second; cruising through these teams were as easy as taking candy from a baby.…

We came crashing down two games later when we lost our first game in the season. Coach Leake let us have it at practice when we had to do conditioning with the distance runners on the track team. We did it as a team with no complaints because it is the way that teams work even though the players that were strutting around did not play as often as others. After we finished the running coach called the end of practice and gave us a ultimatum. "…

Although most agree that sideline cheer could and should not be named a sport, competitive cheerleading most definitely is. Since the beginning of time, groups of people have come together to cheer on their favorite sports team. However, “…it wasn’t until the late 1800s that organize cheering came to be,” (History of Cheerleading). At first, cheerleading was a male-dominate sport.…

Since a very young age, I have had an interest in, and enjoyed caring for others when they are sick or injured. During my Freshman year of high school, I began to realize that the medical field was my calling. I was not sure what area of study I wanted to pursue a career in, but I knew that I had an affinity for the sciences and the medical field. It wasn't until two years later, my Junior year, that radiography became the area of the medical field that I knew I wanted to concentrate on. I have been a cheerleader since third grade.…

Imagine a world where cheer is a sport and all is wonderful. If this was hard it is because that world does not exist. For years cheer has been discussed if it is a sport or not. Cheer meets the definition of a sport, yet for some unknown reason a U.S. judge and others declared it not a sport. Do you know someone who gets fired up when someone says that cheerleading is not as much of a sport as football? Well that’s because cheerleaders just want to be recognized as the athlete they truly are. Cheerleading has been overlooked as a sport for many years. People believed that cheerleaders have been just a support system for the real sports. Despite what people may think, cheerleading is just as much as a sport as football because it requires strength, coordination, and skill.…

Being a high school cheerleader we went above and beyond to make our teams feel special. We did everything from individual spirit posters to hanging up decorations around the school to candy bags and even running through signs for every home game. High school cheerleading is not consider a sport, but you still need to have decent grades to participate. It was not until my junior year of high school where they started to reward sport teams with the highest grade point average in fall, winter, and spring. It was no surprise that cheerleading won two years in a row for both fall and winter sport seasons.…

However, the trouble with throwing the word “sport” around is that most people would not be able to correctly define exactly what a sport is. Some will say there has to be a ball, but what about hockey? They don’t use a ball. Others say a sport has to require skill, but someone can be skilled at balancing a pen on their lips but that is not a sport. According to Merriam-Webster’s definition, a sport is a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other.…

Our basketball team hadn’t won a championship game since 1992. It was my senior year and my last shot at redemption against the defending champs. The whole season we only lost one game, we were projected to lose, and we were the underdogs. We had one week left to prepare for what was the largest game of my high school career. Monday’s practice was the worst of the week, we only ran and shot free throws.…
