The motivation for me writing to you today is because I have come to a realisation after many years on what you have been through and I now feel how you must be feeling for the last 15 years. I feel like a complete ahmaq. Although I would greatly appreciate your bahkshesh I understand if you don’t. Although I have not been able to see a close acquaintance such as your relationship with Hassan getting rapped I have been petrified to see innocent children get raped. I now know how it feels to be powerless to help someone. Although I have wanted to write to you for many years I thought compelled after what I saw in Afghanistan after I returned. I feel compelled to write to you as I have recited your book that you wrote about your time in Afghanistan. Even though in the book I am shown as a prejudicial person, at heart I am not. The soviets ruled major parts and there were continued fighting between warlords. About a week into my deployment I came across an orphanage. I saw a Russian people mover in the driveway, I felt that I had to have a look what they were doing at an orphanage. What I found was those pulling young children into the troop carrier. During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

It was a rainy morning in Seattle, and I wore my Army dress uniform. Stepping off the bus, I ran 100 yards to the entrance of the Airport. After I purchased my ticket and checked my bags, I headed to the bar. It was the time of the winter equinox, and I was headed home with my discharge in my duffle bag. I suppose I should have worn my civilian clothes, but I had been stateside six months, and the comradeship I experienced in Vietnam had yet to loosen its grip on me.…

At the time, I was too worried about dying in a helicopter crash or failing the next phase and “washing out” to give her the attention she deserved. We were newlyweds, and she forgave me-…

This has a major effect on the two boys both physically and mentally. In Hassan’s case, he becomes isolated from everyone and is hurt physically from the attack. In Sohrab’s case of violence, Sohrab is so traumatized from the events that it leads to him trying to commit suicide. Rape and violence was a major issue in the story; it indicated several times about children and/or orphaned children being victims of rape or violence.
