Personal Narrative: My Experience At WVSU

Improved Essays
My first year here at WVSU was far from one of the easiest experiences in my life. During my first year at state I faced some mental issues that made me feel as if I had no motivation to do anything. I barely got out of my bed, and if it wasn't for having food in my dorm I wouldn’t have eaten anything. I can honestly say that I was in a dark place, and no matter what I tried to do I just couldn’t seem to shake it. I tried to talk to my friends about the things going through my head, but no one seemed to understand the pain that I was feeling. At the beginning of this year I had a very bad outrage which ended up with me in the hospital. Although, I was drinking at the time the doctors told me that I needed to see a psychologist and talk

I have always been independent, but I fully seeked independence when I was 16 years old. This was the year of 2016, and this was the year that my life changed; I was forced to grow up and learn how to be more independent. The first step to my seeking of independence was turning 16 years old and getting my driver’s license. This meant I was finally able to go out on my own and not rely on others to take me places anymore. In the year of 2016, I also began taking classes at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute to earn college credits.…

Transitioning occurs in all stages of life whether it’s from a baby crawling to walking, or an elder moving from their home to a retirement facility. One transition in life that most of us face is the evolution from high school to a college or a university. With moving into a new phase of my life I was optimistic about the difficulties of becoming comfortable with the population, the diversity, and the college life in general that Wayne State provides. At UW-Eau Claire, I am looking forward to being apart of a smaller student community and faculty. I feel that the smaller student community will assist me in pursuing my academic goals because I will be able to connect on a more personal level with many students which will lead to lifelong friendships. The smaller class sizes of an average of 27 students compared to the higher average class size of larger universities along with the one to twenty-one teacher-to-student ratio, will help me create a deeper connection and relationship with my professors which is important to me. I feel that the more personal relationships with my professors will help me exceed in my academic career at UW-Eau Claire and will also help me post-college in the workfield.…

The desire to pursue a college degree led me to overload my academic schedule with advanced placement classes, all while struggling with recurring depressive symptoms. The pressure to succeed and a demanding class load led me to plummet to depression my junior year of high school, a fall that was difficult to overcome on my own. At the time, I refused to seek help due to the stigma that was placed on mental illness. I did not want to rely on medication and I felt that receiving counseling meant I was weak and unable to manage on my own. Although I eventually overcame my depression, it was much harder than it should have…

As a running start student I could talk about how my experience at community college helped prepare me to transfer to a four year university, but the lessons I learned there were primarily limited to academics. Sure, I learned how to be successful in a college class room, that online classes don’t fit my learning style, and going to Hong Kong for two weeks in the middle of the quarter will significantly lower a GPA. (I eventually retook the classes from that quarter.)…

When I never thought that I would spend my first two years of college at a community college. I applied to the universities I had in mind during my final year in high school and got accepted into all of them. Unfortunately, the cost was too much to go to any of the colleges, and the scholarship money was barely enough to pay for an entire year. The Honors College Fellows Scholarship was awarded to me, and the Honors College at Lone Star College-North Harris would cover the cost of my first two years of college. It was an Honors College at this community college, and a lot of what I have learned and gained is thanks to this program.…
