Your top choice college may send you head first into a spiraling depression because the only person that could have helped was at the closest community college,” – Anonymous. Hot tears streamed down my cheeks as I cried myself to sleep at three o’clock in the afternoon. I was in the capital of Texas going to one of the best universities in the country for free, but something wasn’t right. I spent nights trying to figure out what to do with my life now that I realized I didn’t belong in Austin. Fast forward 6 months and I was living in Victoria, going to Victoria College, and having the time of my life. So, what happened? How did I go from a lonely and miserable University of Texas student to an enthusiastic and energetic Victoria College student? Glad you asked! …show more content…
Blindly, I moved all my belongings from a San Jacinto dorm room into a 725 square foot apartment. I started classes during the interim for the summer taking Microbiology alongside Anatomy and Physiology. It was hard, but I had a goal; to gain admittance into the famous Victoria College ADN program. It seemed as if everything stood in my way. Out of 19 credits I had transferred from UT, VC accepted only my English 1 and psychology, not my statistics, chemistry, or many others. A nursing advisor even told me my chances of getting in were slim to none. I prayed every night from the time I applied to when I got the acceptance or rejection letter. I had 10 points toward my application whereas most of my peers had at least 13. I had left UT, moved to a city where I knew absolutely nobody, and risked everything I had for the letter I received on October 6,

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

Being a student at Queen’s University taught me that the opportunities we seek out teach us about our character and more importantly, about our passions in life; they help us to define our goals and will lead us to be successful. I have been fortunate to gain valuable experience as a Queen’s student, orphanage volunteer, and drop in center volunteer. My experiences shaped my understanding of teaching and learning processes as I learned the valuable qualities that are exhibited by successful educators that establish supportive learning environments for their students. While working in Romanian orphanages this past summer, I learned how each child presents their own challenges as they learn, and communicate differently. In a short time with a great deal of patience and dedication I learned enough of the language as I led games, bible studies, and helped children with conflict resolution.…

The summer before senior year of high school, I spent three weeks on a Brown University Pre-College Program, traveling to numerous Spanish cities, including Madrid, Córdoba, Salamanca, Seville, and Segovia. Every day, we were confronted with another challenge, such as the language barrier and the one hundred degree, dry heat, but these obstacles were outweighed by the various unique cultures of the country. The love of food and music, historical architecture that has been influenced by so many countries and cultures, wild and diverse landscapes, and passionate people evoked my love of traveling, new experiences and immersion in diverse cultures. A few months after this defining trip, I began applying to over ten colleges and universities, even though I knew exactly which school I wanted to attend.…

Other than the costs, it also would’ve been wise of the author to include statistics of how many students who were unsure of their future that chose community college and most of all a survey of students who chose community college due to rejection from a four-year university. In conclusion, author Liz Addison used quotes as well as personal experience to convey her points. Although, she claims that high-school graduates face a rather difficult path to a four-year university of their choice, there was a shortage of effective evidence that hindered her chances of fully conveying her point. Other than a slight difficulty in conveying her first point, she had a decent amount of effective evidence to convey her second point. Addison was capable of conveying her second point, which was defining the truth of community colleges through the usage of personal…

Over the past three years, I have been greatly influenced by the children with whom I have had the opportunity to work. My involvement in children's programs, during past summers and all year-round, have made my student life easier, by giving me the guidance to pursue a post-secondary education in the field of health, focussing on that of children and adolescents. I have spent the past three summers volunteering, then working, at a community children's camp, with kids aged three to 11. In addition, I have worked for the past two years as a student teacher at a religious centre. These two jobs, in particular, have given me great opportunities to bond with the children.…
