Personal Narrative: My Experience At The Summer Mentorship Program

Learning to succeed is the main focus that schools teach through the academic school year: in school and life. That's what's taught from elementary school to high school. During the summer of 2017 at The School of Engineering, I had to face obstacles that emerged from out of nowhere while also trying to build a functional robot. While working on the project, I was challenged and taught lessons that are not developed in basic studies. Teachers usually have an agenda for the day, but during my summer at the Summer Mentorship Program, I never had a straight agenda to follow but a due date to work for. Learning to solder in a day to frying a fretboard on the same day trained me to accept that failure was okay. Usually, one doesn’t think about failing because it just leads to more failure or brings down the whole idea of continuing but during my summer at Penn, I was not allowed to just give up after a little …show more content…
My partners over the summer allowed me to develop my social skills to work with others and be able to communicate with one another when an issue had arisen. Not only did we help each other build parts for the robot and help write lines of code, but actually spent time together as if we’ve known each other for years by spending lunch together to hanging out after program hours for a while. Traveling to Picatinny Arsenal and Princeton University to learn about the type of engineering work that is done, brought us together more and had wished there were more planned trips to go on. The long 3-4 hour long bus rides that felt like an eternity, but always had a great time getting to know one another, were the most memorable moments during my summer at the Summer Mentorship Program. With very few hours to work with, I strive that future students who decided to enter the program get an extra hour or so, together and get more time to be able to finish

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

Before high school, I always thought I was an average student, but when I transitioned into high school, people started to point out that I had potential. I began to work harder than I had ever before and I began to accelerate in every course. This never took a toll on me till the tenth grade, when my mental health started degrading. Anxiety was my first foe. During the beginning of the tenth grade, I had set high expectations for myself and it began to affect my life greatly For instance, after finishing the test, I would think about just one specific question that I thought I completed wrong.…

I'm going to write about my experience at job corps so far. The first day I came to Job Corps was really different. It was nothing what I expected ,I thought it was going to be something like Zoey 101 with lots of freedom and respect from students and staff but its nothing like that. There's not really any freedom here for minors which I dislike. My Grandparents came in to drop me and my sister off and sign some papers.…

Failure can be our greatest teacher. It teaches us skills and knowledge which cannot be learned in a classroom - skills and knowledge that are not only necessary to thrive in college, but also essential to flourish our characteristics needed to become successful in life. Specifically, the most important attributes failure can teach us are determination, patience, and resilience - qualities that are vital in keeping up with the rigor of college. As stated by Perez in his article, “The lessons of failure can’t be taught in a classroom; they are experienced and reflected upon.” This means that the lessons we learn from failure are not just ordinary knowledge which we can get from anywhere else; they come within ourselves.…

A learning experiences that I have learn throughout sports is to never give up. In sports there will always be people working harder than you. If you want to be the best or good at something you have to work hard every time you step on and off the court. Another reason that not giving up in sports is because success isn't rewarding if it's easy. For example sports wouldn’t be fun if you would just won every game.…

My first day of Sophomore year went pretty well. It had some ups and downs but overall i'm pretty happy with the end results. All of my classes were exactly what I was hoping for except my math class. This year I decided to skip Integrated Math 2 and go straight to Trig/precalc. The only bad part about this decision was knowing I have a chance of not being with any of my friends.…

The semi-autonomous wheelchair moved slowly across the long hallway littered with dusty computers and old electronic devices, successfully avoiding collisions. Prior to my internship at the Intelligent Robotics Lab at Washington State University, I did not have any experience conducting university research or project-specific technical knowledge. However, with all the gusto a 15-year-old could muster, I dived into my project simultaneously learning advanced software languages such as ROS and SLAM while making progress on the project. Barely a few days into my project, Professor Taylor mentioned he was leaving to New York for 10 days for a robotics conference.…

Personal Essay First Draft When I was 8 years old I realized my brother Benny and I were twins. I realized this the first year we went to summer camp. There was not necessarily one singular moment when I discovered we were twins, it was over the three week period that this epiphany came to me. For the first few days no one could tell us apart. In our activities, meals, and sometimes in our cabins other people could not tell us apart.…

The mentorship sessions so far have been an eye-opening experience for me as someone who has the ability to help others with my experiences. I learned that the things that I learned and experienced throughout my years here could actually be helpful to those who are younger than me. When I was in grade nine I learned my way around the system through trial and error, and I made countless mistakes before I figured out my own system on how to be successful here. I learned that I can teach my mentee about all the things I learned, as well as the mistakes I made so she does not have to go through the same things. In addition, I provide her with advice on how to deal with certain situations as well as how to cope with the stress at school.…

Everyone learns and studies differently so in order to really succeed you must find what works for you, and how to keep everything in order. It took me forever to really understand I needed to find my own organization and study tactics. Along with organization the need to use my failures to rise up in my classes really led me to maintain high grades. In my edblog “Failure” I discuss the troubles of failure and how to use it to construct a foundation for school. I find I learn more from failures than excelling grades, because it shows that not everything can be handed to you and that I needed to step up, change what I had been doing, and learn new things in order to help me succeed.…

My coworkers who I did the most team-projects with were impressed with my writing. My first weeks on the job they claimed they enjoyed the “refreshing and new” incite that I brought to the team. AP style writing was used in all of my projects and I felt that was to my advantage. I was able to pick out what edits were needed, and then use my resources, such as the AP style guide, to find the answer. A large portion of my work included proof reading projects.…

I also saw many techniques that she performed on them such as using hot pads, taking sonograms, and evening looking at x-rays.…
