Personal Narrative: My Experience At The Brookville General Hospital

Improved Essays
Another day went by in the Brookville General hospital. And it feels great because every week there is something new which makes you gain a new understanding about s skill. My shift started by listening to the report to find out how my assigned patient was doing. I had a patient who suffered from ankle fracture and as usual, I started by checking her vital signs, level or orientation and also skin assessment from head to toe to find out if everything within normal range. However, pain assessment took a part in my assessment, especially since she suffered from physical injury. Once I have done that, my patient was ready to have her breakfast therefore, I helped her with setting the tray and I made sure that she is comfortable and I left to let her have her meal. …show more content…
The rest of my day was basically checking and my patient and assessing her vital signs again. Although my day was very interesting, but I still made a big mistake which was leaving the patient with a low blood pressure. Although, I informed the nurse about that. Even though, I was planning to recheck her vital signs when I come back, which I did, but it was still a mistake to leave a patient without making sure everything was alright. What I should have done was recheck her blood pressure again before leaving the floor to go for my break. Additionally, I got the chance to watch one of the nurses to setting up blood transfusion for one of the patient, which was the same idea as setting an IV but it was useful to learn that. Also, I got to and observe the insertion of catheter for one of the patient, even though the insertion was extremely difficult to do regarding the swelling he had but, I felt it was important to see that in order to get an idea about the struggle that you might face. Overall, I will say that I had an interesting day and I am looking forward to next week to learn more about stroke, especially since I will be in stroke

My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

A Respiratory Therapists role in long-term care facility and Homecare My time working at CCOH and RHCS was exciting and interesting. Although they are both respiratory therapist jobs, they each demonstrated something different. While CCOH showed how it is to work in a long-term facility and have consistent patient interaction. At RHCS driving around to the client’s place of business or residence to check on, or collect the equipment, made it personal able.…

Weekly Self S.O.A.P - A. S- Discuss your SUBJECTIVE feelings for this week: I rather enjoyed myself this week. It was nice to take a break from med surg and shadow a team leader for a few hours. I observed the meeting in the morning with all management from the units to see how they were handling staffing issues and what they could do to help when one unit has difficulties.…

Kat took me to the ambulance and showed me the things we would need in each case that we would go to and no matter what the case was the two things they would need is the medicine bag and the stretcher. Then we went through the ambulance and she showed me where most of the equipment was and the medications. As she was showing them to me she was checking their expiration dates and how much was left of each medication that they used often. We then had our first case in the city of Newburgh courthouse.…

In March of 2016, I was involved in a freak accident while volunteering for NHS, leaving a portion of my spine broken. I spent two weeks in the hospital, one of which was spent at Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital, where the goal is to get you out of the hospital room and walking again. To my surprise, during my stay there I was the youngest person in the whole hospital, with all of the others being well over forty all with differing reasons for being admitted. As a patient myself, I knew how gruesome the recovery process was both mentally and physically. Even with so many people visiting and showing their support, it was still an incredibly hard journey.…

Today at Simulation Lab I performed health history on a patient. Firstly, I commenced by preparing myself for the interview. Although I was nervous, as a nurse I had to be confident and prepare myself mentally and kept an open mind to meet the patient. In addition to preparing myself, I prepared the environment, making sure seating and arrangement was in place and the room was comfortable and private. Having done this, I utilized Florence Nightingale’s theory of environmental need.…

Today, everything went great! I am so excited about the things I've gotten to do today! First thing this morning, I got to do a blood draw, then I went in to the insurance and billing office to begin making calls to insurance companies to check patients benefits for global maternity. Afterwards, I followed an interpreter, nurse practitioner, and an LPN to exam rooms to listen in on communication skills and cultural needs between each patient and employees. The communication from nurse practitioner, to LPN, to patient was very smooth, helpful, and served the patient's needs to the fullest.…

My partner and I were designated to help care for an elderly gentleman who recently had an ischemic stroke. Our resident was sleeping in a chair in the center room and neither of us wanted to wake him until it was time for breakfast. I asked one of the LPNs on the unit if she needed any help and she wanted us to take our residents vital signs before medication administration. We awakened him and walked him to his room to provide for privacy while we took his vital signs, which included taking blood pressure manually. This was a skill that I was not entirely confident in, but I knew it was crucial and something I needed to do; it was essential to put my patient first.…
