Personal Narrative: My Experience At Prairie Creek Baptist Church

Great Essays
I was introduced to my Messiah, Jesus Christ on April 10,1977 at Prairie Creek Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. The key text for the sermon that Sunday morning was from Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” In a picture in my mind I could see Jesus with His arms open wide, inviting me to be His child. As the congregation sang the hymn, “Just as I am”, I walked down the aisle and prayed with the pastor to accept Jesus and to make Him Lord of my life. I was water baptized the following Sunday. From the moment I asked Jesus to be my Lord, our friendship began. He talked to me and I talked to Him. In spite of having people …show more content…
It was described to me as being an experience with God so we could have better fellowship with Him. Curious to see what this was all about my family attended our first charismatic church service. The people raised their hands in praise during worship. People around us were talking funny during prayer and it didn’t sound like English. I could feel the excitement in the room and knew there was something different in the environment. People at this church looked much happier than the people at the Baptist Church we had been attending. The following week, my Mom and I attended a ladies Bible study where the baptism of the Holy Spirit was discussed in depth. After a brief discussion with the Bible study teacher after class I prayed with the teacher to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I immediately had words in my mouth that were in a language I didn’t understand. My mind tried to analyze it but the Bible study teacher told me not to be concerned with it. She let me know that it was the Holy Spirit praying through me. My relationship with the Lord went to a whole new level. Immediately I begged my parents to let me attend every possible ladies Bible study class that was available since there was not a program for teenagers. For the next three years I attended numerous classes, growing and …show more content…
in music theory. As I took classes towards a doctoral degree in 20th Century Music Theory the emphasis in the study quickly shifted to witches, mind control and the contacting of demons as part of the study and alleged understanding of that music. I was invited by key faculty to attend a weekly spiritual session where it was rumored that spirits were conjured up and known to appear to the participants. This was far beyond what I was willing to do as a Christian. My Mom had recently become very ill and money was quickly becoming an issue for the family. Confused and unsure of what to do I dropped out of the doctoral program and took a summer job working as an assistant in a business office. The work was uninteresting but paid well. My parents were extremely pleased, as they had not been fans of me pursuing a life in music. Not wanting to completely give up music, I attempted to continue to teach lessons and play various church services while

This summer, my dad, older sister, and I flew to South Carolina for debate nationals. Since we had a few days before the tournament, we decided to do a little sightseeing. On Sunday, we visited two churches in Atlanta, Georgia. We first went to the Ebenezer Baptist Church, which is a church housed inside the “real” church that Martin Luther King Jr. had served in. The service was very lively, consisting of clapping, singing, and dancing.…

Grace Baptist Church kindly welcomed my attendance to the first religious service I have been to in over a decade. Each member is actively involved in the church community as well as local charities. Overall positive, the experience enlightened my comprehension of the congregation’s convictions pertaining to religious values and where they are derived from. Pleasantly greeted as well as given a compassionately farewell the members of the church treated me with the utmost respect. Nonetheless, members do not always welcome individuals nicely, such as those within the LGBTQ+ community are not readily accepted as easily.…

My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. Being part of such a small community while heightening my sense of being has also made me more appreciative and understanding of other cultures & groups. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. My community has also enabled me to be a better communicator- as often times questions are asked regarding my ethnicity and religion where I can act as a spokesperson for the…

Many people don’t know what they want to be when they “grow up”, as for my mother she didn’t know what type of religion she wanted to be in when she “grew up”. However, she did know the basics that she believed in which was God, the Holy Spirit, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Bible that being said she considered herself Christian and raised me as a Non-Denominational Christian. That was until my senior year of High School when my mom decided she no longer wanted to be part of the Non-Denominational Christian faith and switched over to becoming part of the LDS faith known as the Mormons and flipped my life upside-down with their different views of norms and values. Growing up Non-Denominational Christian is fairly simple faith and to me…

For my service project I chose to conduct an interview with someone who practices a faith different from mine so I interviewed a Mormon. Some might consider Mormonism to be part of the Christian faith, but I would readily argue that it has differences that are substantial and irrefutable. I had always wondered about the beliefs of the people who spend their youth in ties knocking on doors and several movies made the differences seem pretty extreme. I began to wonder what it is that they really believe and how they can make it make sense in the world that we live in.…

When you think about religion what is the first thing that pops into your mind? Probably what religion you claim yourself with. Well for me I think of being a Quaker and what they have taught me to believe from when I was little to now. The Quakers believe in six things and those are Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship. These are the six S-P-I-C-E-S. I have grown up with these beliefs but now that I am older…

My life before my conversion consisted mainly of growing up in a Southern Baptist Church. Throughout my life I have heard the gospel countless times, but never accepted it as absolute truth to follow. Instead, my life until college was characterized by performing a lot of religious activity such as youth groups, church camps, and going to church on Sundays. I was in a tireless attempt to live out a religion that proved I was good enough to be declared righteous before God. It was a restless attempt to be whatever everyone else want me to be.…

An important rite of passage that has held the most significance for me is when I had gotten baptized and then took my first communion. Baptisms are important to the Catholic religion. Getting baptized means you are officially entering the Catholic church. Ordinarily, children get baptized into the Catholic church when they are infants, but my mother decided to have me baptized when I was eight years old. My parents, grandparents, and soon-to-be godparents were attending my baptism.…

The only location open at that hour was a small coffee shop, and on arrival, I seemed to be the only patron. Sitting by myself for some thirty minutes, I overheard the name of a young boy whom I knew to be going through a difficult time emotionally. One of the members of the conversation in a back booth left, and the other stayed behind. I went around to the booth and asked permission to sit down, and there was the young man’s mother. Our discussion began with the concern surrounding her son and ended with her asking for the help only God could give for her to be the best mom she could be by becoming a Christian and allowing the Holy Spirit to direct her from within.…

I was raised to be catholic which as you may know is a strict, and structured type of mass. Their practices in mass is exactly the same way each Sunday you attend, the only thing that usually differs is the subject of which the mass has been planned around. That is why I chose to go to a non denominational church for my church visit reflection. This is because these two religions are extremely different, and a couple of my friends on the soccer team go there for church each Sunday. The church I attended was called Victory Church, as soon as I walked in I was greeted with food and coffee, and a numerous amount of people gathering around for morning chit chat before the worship had started.…
