Personal Narrative: My Experience At Mt. Hood Community College

The students of Mt. Hood Community College campus are the most diverse that I’ve ever encountered. Before I moved here, I resided in Nevada, the people there tended to look more alike. It ordinarily comes as a shock when I say that Nevada isn’t diverse, but it is the truth. My hometown has a fairly new identity; it’s still finding it. A majority of my life was spent there, in addition to a handful of other places. We traveled a great deal as well, so I would be fascinated by the endless amount of cultures on our planet. I considered myself prepared for moving to Oregon; prepared for attending college. Consequently, discerning all of these cultures, every single day, is nearly a shock to me. Moving around may have prepared me in some ways, but also has hindered me in others. I didn’t have an abundance of opportunities presented to me, college campus visits were never in my schedule, I had no idea what to expect.
The first characteristic that I noticed about the campus was the sheer enormity of it. A gymnasium sits on the southern end of campus with multiple pools along with fields. Opposite, on the northern side is the early childhood center. I can only assume if it is more daycare or education for that location. The Academic center, the main building, resides in the center of campus, but everywhere there was to look were different

Contrarily, I learned that the average age of enrollment at Mt. Hood is thirty-one years. That’s thirteen years more than I originally presumed. Just like they have programs for every type of student, they also have them for every age. In all of my classes so far, I’ve encountered working mothers and fathers. Those in their late twenties, that realized their associate degree wasn’t enough for them in the competitive job
