Personal Narrative: My Experience At Frontier Bound

After attending Frontier Bound and learning about the Community of Inquiry, I feel much more confident in my ability to succeed at Frontier. Both the COI and my experience at Frontier Bound will change the way I have approached my education in the past, and how I plan to proceed in my future studies. The entire premise of the Community Of Inquiry intrigued me when it was presented at Bridge Bound. It is commendable that a school would actively seek ways to improve their students’ education and learning experience. I believe that COI will broaden my education by incorporating the three areas of the model. I have always believed that hard work and diligence was most of I needed to thrive in a class. Before attending bridge bound and learning about the COI, I planned to manage my education with similar methodology as I previously had, with hard work, time management, and self-reliance.

I was pleased to hear about the school’s Quality Enhancement Plan(QEP), as I feel it is an asset to students and the University. Online learning does not quiet fulfil ones’ senses like traditional brick and mortar classes. There are no classmates to converse with or sit by, no typical classroom sounds or smells, and no teacher’s voice. I would imagine that staring at a computer for several hours a day and reading text books can get pretty monotonous. FNU listened to students input, and incorporates an array of modalities for presentation including, PowerPoint presentations, audio/video, lectures. I am a person who gets uninterested easily, therefore, I will benefit from the variety of teaching methods. Students can aide in improvement of courses by completing course evaluations. After learning the significance of my input, I will be sure to provide feedback that I believe will improve the class when executing my course

“Why I Chose Southwest” As a homeschooled high school senior, I am unable to take Advanced Placement courses, which are college-level classes taken at a high school. Students earn college credits by taking an exam at the end of the year. To remedy this, I decided to register at Southwest Tennessee Community College for dual enrollment classes. I chose Southwest for a multitude of reasons: to complete my high school education, to provide challenging courses in preparation for college, and to grant me college credit. I opted to take Pre Calculus, English Composition, and Anatomy & Physiology this semester.…

President Barack Obama once said “When all American are treated as equal, no matter who they are or who they love, we are all more free.” As a Hispanic LGBTQ American, these words resonated with me. In my exposure to a plethora of cultures, in my personal experience and academic career, I have had the privilege to understand and further appreciate many lifestyles. Through these experiences, my mission: to serve toward compassion and respect, rather than intolerance and isolation, has remained clear. These past 8 years, Obama has been a champion for LGBTQ+ Americans.…

I saw only darkness, save the faint glow of lava rocks in a small hole dug in front of me. I breathe in what should be steaming hot air, but it is dry, yet so hot. Even growing up in Tucson where the summer heat can reach 110 degrees, I’ve never experienced something quite like this. I wished I was playing out in that summer heat, this felt like I was being cooked in an oven. I breathe in again, more dry air.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

I never thought online education, which is the type of education I now prefer, could be so rewarding. You know the old saying it takes a village to raise a child. Well it takes a well-grounded on-line school, with committed faculty and staff to guide and champion a student to their ultimate goal, graduation. On line education has given me a reason to believe that all things are possible and…

When it was announced on the first day of Blue Lake International, a four-week music camp, that I had gotten the position of first flute, my heart swelled with pride. However, the position was soon taken by a counselor, Tracey whom I thought would merely assist with rehearsals. Furthermore, Tracey began taking major flute solos from the students because she believed they lacked the skill to perform them. Her method of teaching mainly employed grabbing instruments, shouting, and glaring. Afraid that she would ruin my experience, I quickly picked up on what she disliked and started acting much friendlier.…

Last Thursday, I took the final exam for the Agent Trainee Program from UTA and it went well! Starting at an agency is the best thing for me since I’m at the pulse of every business deal in Hollywood. It forces me to learn quickly and have an opinion. Being in the mailroom was helpful to learn the layout of the building and the names of the agents, but being a temp on various desks in the building is forcing me to adapt and keep up with the high volume of calls and emails.…

Regardless of the beneficial or detrimental outcome of my experiences, I have tried to at least glean some insight into who I would like to become and what I stand for as an individual in a growing global community. I grew up on a large open property somewhat out in the country in Healdsburg. My family and I called it (and still do) “The Ranch”. Though all in separate houses, most of my family lived there; my grandma and grandpa in one house, my aunt’s family in one, and my mom and I in another. We all were very close; my cousin on my aunt’s side was practically a sister, and my aunt and uncle a second set of parents. It was rare for one of us to not be at the others house.…
