Personal Narrative: My Experience At Destiny Church

I attended my very first worship service on November 22, 2015. It was at Destiny Christian Church. Destiny Church is a non-denominational church that believes that God has a perfect will for us, to give tools to be successful Christians, and to provide practical advice to live a life that portrays God’s love. Their mission is, to reach the lost, restore the fallen and renew the passion. They have a three part philosophy; belong, believe, and become.

They believe that anyone can belong to the church even if you do not believe, unsure, or if you do not have a relationship with Christ. They want you to know that you are loved, welcomed, and accepted the way you are. I was surprised that I felt that. Walking into the building, by myself,

They have been in full-time ministry for twenty-nine years and have ministries in two campuses. During the sermon, you can tell that they have been doing this for a while. The sermon was precise and it transitioned very well between the two pastors. All newcomers to the church have the opportunity to meet the pastors after the service, which I did. I could tell during the sermon that they were passionate about the Word of God, they continued to show their passion at the meet and greet.

The sermon was about generosity. Mostly, they talked from their hearts and gave six different ways we, as humans, can be generous. They used roughly nine passages from the Bible throughout their sermon. The passages they choose to use showed Jesus as a friend who wanted to show and have others be generous towards others. I was surprised that the sermon was not as “preachy” as I thought it would be. I thought that the sermon would be “God this and Jesus that”. I enjoyed the sermon, like you, would if you were listening to an inspirational speaker. It was a speech that was both, inspiring and

I went to the 9:00 service so I am not sure if that made a difference. The age range was pretty mixed and from what I could tell the gender composition was primarily all Caucasian. Most of the congregation was dressed in casual clothing. Some were dressed in nice dress pants and a button-down shirt and then there were some in t-shirts and jeans. A few people that were in t-shirts were volunteers for the next service (which I was told at a later time). My mom’s family went to church and always dressed in “Sunday clothes”. I thought that you should wear your Sunday best when going to church. For some reason, I feel that it is disrespectful to wear jeans and t-shirts. I thought that church was a time to get dressed up. I guess, not

I definitely felt a connection with the members because we all shared similar views. There was nothing truly different in our beliefs. The pastor was very relatable in his examples. He made sure he used experiences people understand and related it to the passages in the bible. To answer my initial question, a non-denominational church does have differences when compared to a Haitian Baptist church.…

True and significant life is found in Jesus Christ and because of my firm conviction of this it has been my primary objective to point people to Jesus. Being persuaded that Christ wants Christians and especially those who take leadership roles to minister to the needs of others, I have ordered my life to conform to that conviction. Ultimately, Jesus desires that each Christian serves him by serving others; this is accomplished in a variety of ways – feeding those who are hungry, teaching everyone the life saving Gospel, and by leading in a way that reflects the glory of Christ. It has been my immense pleasure to have had the opportunity to preach God’s Word to thousands of people over the past fifteen years. It is my sincere passion to see people embrace Christ Jesus as their Lord and savior and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds through the Word of God.…

There are many problems with today’s preaching and Pasquarello in his book Sacred Rhetoric: Preaching as a Theological and Pastoral Practice of the Church examines how this can be fixed (vii). Preachers need to go back to the foundations of good preaching exemplified in those preachers of the past who practiced “doctrine, biblical exegesis, worship, spirituality and the moral life, and so forth” (vii). This book review will examine selected preachers that Pasquarello presents, with an emphasis on the importance of preaching through the ministry of God’s Word. Summary…

I chose to interview my mother’s pastor because even though I have attended services, I didn’t feel that the Pastor (s) are from my original tradition from when I grew up in Florida. Even though they practice the same religion I felt they were Catholic than Christian’s. To fulfill this project, I contacted my mother to see if she would feel comfortable me contacting her Pastor. After my mother agreed, I phoned her Pastor and asked for her permission to be interviewed.…

This is one of the five teaching blocks within the gospel that helps to establish Jesus as a teacher. The people are amazed at his wisdom and deep knowledge of God’s will. During the Sermon, Jesus expands the Ten Commandments and gives the Beatitudes up on a mountain. This is symbolism that shows Jesus as a Moses figure to the Jewish audience, since he is talking about the Ten Commandments on a mountain, just as Moses was given them by God on Mount Sinai. The Sermon on the Mount also reveals a large extent of Jesus’ divine revelation, as his teaching surpassed anything in Israel’s history.…

    C. John H Leith is the Pemberton Professor of Theology Emeritus at Union Theological Seminary in Virgina. He set out several years ago to identify some of the problems that exist in theological education and preparing pastors for the future. In all his strudies he has discovered that people do not go to church to learn about politics, movements, or conflict management. Leith says that they come “to hear about what God has done for human beings and for their salvation, to hear the Christian hope in the presence of death.”…
