When it was announced on the first day of Blue Lake International, a four-week music camp, that I had gotten the position of first flute, my heart swelled with pride. However, the position was soon taken by a counselor, Tracey whom I thought would merely assist with rehearsals. Her method of teaching mainly employed grabbing instruments, shouting, and glaring. Afraid that she would ruin my experience, I quickly picked up on what she disliked and started acting much friendlier. Resultantly, she started sharing some of the solos with me. If I have not challenged myself to practice and to confront challenges, I could not have become the principal player in our school’s jazz band and wind ensemble. After several breakthroughs, I decided to share my inspirations to the younger generation. This year, I am one of the coordinators of the Molding Musicians program supported by the Cypress Boys and Girls Club, teaching the fifth and sixth graders how to play an instrument. I appreciate the fact that my achievements did not come from an easy work, but rather a persistent standing against…

I saw only darkness, save the faint glow of lava rocks in a small hole dug in front of me. I breathe in what should be steaming hot air, but it is dry, yet so hot. Even growing up in Tucson where the summer heat can reach 110 degrees, I’ve never experienced something quite like this. I wished I was playing out in that summer heat, this felt like I was being cooked in an oven. I breathe in again, more dry air.…

It was the second week of school when we first met the string orchestra teacher; no one gave her a schedule. Her curly ginger hair, piercings, and her tattoos made her look kind of “intimidating”, but she was a very fun and laid back person once we got to know her. Throughout the year, she had taught us a lot like how to vibrato correctly, and we had played an ample amount of music that year as well. I worked hard to improve my music skills that year because we were going…

During the summer of 2016, I attended summer school for marching band. This event was not mandatory, since it was solely for the purpose of helping the incoming freshman, whom have no experience with music or marching. As one of many, I volunteered as a helper and as a veteran leader to facilitate the freshman to understand the techniques necessary to participate in marching band. Furthermore, I demonstrated how to be responsible by not missing practice days and informing the band director, a day before, if I was going to be absent. Acting as a role model will help ensure the new incoming freshman how to behave maturely, that hopefully will be effective in the future.…

The Plane Ride When I was nine my family started a move from the tranquil suburbs of San Jose, California to the desert city of Windhoek, Namibia, located in southern Africa. My parents were taking myself, along with my younger sister and brother, around the globe because they felt a calling from God to be missionaries. All of our possessions were sold off, including my much beloved toys, until everything we had could fit into eight large suitcases. These suitcases are what we carried to the airport as we prepared for our journey. I felt no small amount of apprehension and excitement in what lay ahead of me in the new country, but an event I would experience in the coming flight would forever change and shape my perspective of how I see the…
