Personal Narrative: My Experience At Bellingham High School

Woodring has given me several opportunities to engage with the larger Bellingham community. I was first able to more fully engage with Bellingham’s community through my practicum placement at Bellingham High School. My experience at the high school has brought me to three English Language Learner students. These students have become the brightest part of my week. While I do not share a language with these students, we have created a bond. I am able to mentor these students and provide for them the extra help they need to succeed in their ninth grade English class, where they were unable to receive the attention they needed in order to convey their ideas before. Woodring courses have also brought me to two different middle schools: Shuksan and Kulshan. At both of these middle schools I have been given the opportunity to get to know several middle school aged students of different backgrounds. While Kulshan serves a more well-off set of students than …show more content…
This vision inspires me to not just get to know my students and to not just teach them the curricula, but to teach these students in accordance to their cultural strengths and personal abilities. Every student deserves to grow and learn. Each student deserves to feel safe and cared for when at school and it is the teacher’s duty to create this environment. Growing up with very little money and very little support for me to attend a university allows for me to approach the Woodring College of Education vision with a different view from most. It is exceptionally important to me that every student feels that they have received the support that they need. My experiences at Bellingham High School, which are described above, have only reinforced my desire to make sure every student is treated equitably. By getting to know the students I work with I gain their trust, which is critical to being able to teach students based upon their

My years in high school were quite thrilling and adventurous. Starting as a freshman, I had no idea where I was going and what was going to be expected of me. Over the years I became involved with extracurricular activities which led to my primary interest I had developed in technology and the sciences. As a freshman I joined the Students with Future Interests in Technology Club, Spanish Club, and Robotics Club. These clubs stayed with me till I graduated high school and I have loved them ever since I got involved in them.…

Weeks away from the start of my senior year, I was asked to proffer a speech to a culmination of faculty members, many of whom I have known for the better part of my existence. It was requested that I speak on my vision and purpose of the Winton Woods District, and how it has afforded me a wealth of opportunities that will forever be stitched into the fabric of who I am. Immediately, I seized the chance to describe to a couple hundred educators exactly what they signed up to be a part of. Winton Woods and its teachers are concerned with more than a curriculum scripted across a syllabus that is to be approved by the state or a profiting institution. Winton Woods is more than a homogenous body of students work solely on building a resume that…

Before high school, I always thought I was an average student, but when I transitioned into high school, people started to point out that I had potential. I began to work harder than I had ever before and I began to accelerate in every course. This never took a toll on me till the tenth grade, when my mental health started degrading. Anxiety was my first foe. During the beginning of the tenth grade, I had set high expectations for myself and it began to affect my life greatly For instance, after finishing the test, I would think about just one specific question that I thought I completed wrong.…

During my time at Heather Hills, I had the privilege of having a plethora of devoted teachers who truly wished to see me succeed. These teachers latched onto the slightest promises of intelligence that my fifth-grade self could exhibit, and tenderly nurtured the minimal skills that I had into a student who, at the time, performed at the top of his class. Heather Hills was a place in which I was enabled to flourish as a student. It was within the walls of the school that I was able to accomplish all manner of academic achievement, ranging from a regional math championship to being an honorable mention in the school’s “Write a Book” competition. Because the school facilitated these competitions, I was provided with a method by which I could accomplish things I never believed I could.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

When I first arrived at Santa Teresa High School in sophomore year, I wasn’t trying as hard to be a good student. I had given up on school because of an incident I went through, the beginning of my sophomore year at my old school. I didn’t think that my situation would change so fast. During my sophomore year my grades weren’t so high; that all changed the following year. I took the AP Computer Science course that was taught by one of my MESA advisors.…

Last week, as I was strolling past a middle school, I saw a teacher sitting down next to a student. The teacher was giving advice to the student. The image of the teacher helping the student reminded me of when my English teacher would help me with my assignments. I enrolled in Advanced Placement English Language and Composition in my junior year at Grant High School. AP English was rumored to be a very tenacious class and the teacher, Ms. Warfield, was known for giving perplexing reading articles for homework.…

“Before my journey began, my mind raced with the rumors I had heard. Thankfully, due to the short six days of APCOMP so far, I have already began to feel more at ease in classroom number 246 despite the rumors that danced in my head continuously even before I made the decision to sign up for the most infamous class at Idaho Falls High School.
