Personal Narrative: My Experience At A Youth Basketball Camp

Improved Essays
For my project, I chose to do a youth basketball camp. It was for, but limited to, the Phoenix Talent school district. My partner Ariana and I taught each of our students the fundamentals and techniques of basketball while maintaining a positive attitude all around. We had practices twice a week in the Phoenix Elementary gym.
After the first two practices, Ariana and I were quickly able to determine what the kids enjoyed doing during practices which ranged from scrimmages to box out drills. From there we put together the practice plans for the upcoming days based on what they liked and from what we noticed they needed improvement with. Another major thing that we got taken care of was planning for our fundraiser and tournament. We had to make t-shirts, find referees, and a location for our car wash fundraiser.

When it came to working with kids who knew nothing about basketball, patience was key. It took time for them to learn the fundamentals and techniques. Organization was another thing I’ve learned to master during my practices. When we had a our agendas written up the day before, our practices ran smoothly. I loved working with our kids. They made me enjoy it and I was able to picture myself as a coach in the future, or even an elementary teacher. These kids taught me things like patience, organization, and persistence, but they also taught me how to enjoy life and find the good in everything.
I can proudly say that my project was a success. Since most of our kids are still in middle school, I will not be able to see them try-out in high school. However, I did see one our kids try-out and make the freshmen team. Her name was Karen and she was shy but she put her fears behind her and went outside her box. That to me was the entire reason for having my camp and although I can’t see all my kids try-out, I know they will do great

Chapter Quote/Paraphrase/Summary Commentary 1 Gladwell explains how the older children on a hockey roster are more successful than the younger kids on the same team. This is due to more time devoted to practice and skill development because, “it’s the biggest nine- and ten-year-olds who get the most coaching and practice” (30). This chapter seemed very similar to my own life. Growing up, the coaches had their eyes on the special kids from the beginning.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

Like all children all I ever wanted was to be big and do big people things. I engaged in a few family members that I would look up to and try everything they did. I use to pretend to go grocery shopping and being a parent at times. At the age of eight, I had worn the worst pain ever and that was watching my five, year old brother getting hit by a car while trying to cross the street riding a bicycle that had a loose chain. I remember him trying to get up and get to me, but a few adults that had witnessed the accident had told him to lay down.…

My modified basketball years, seventh and eighth grade, were by far some of the most fun years of basketball thanks to Carrie Weegar. Carrie was our coach and she made practice so much fun each and every day. Along with working hard and practicing the fundamentals that we would need to know for JV basketball, we played many different games and had many moments where we would just fool around and have fun with each other. While being a part of the modified basketball team I got to know a few girls, Abby Taylor, Jenna Kesner, and Haleigh Agans, who ended up being my teammates all throughout high school and we accomplished great things…

Basketball has been a part of my life as I have played it since I could remember. I was in the school’s team year after year and was even drafted for the team as high school came. However, a bike accident prior to the regional tournament took a toll on my body. The lower pelvic of my right foot was injured and could no longer withstand the stress of playing basketball. All hopes and expectations of playing in the high school team were shattered.…

First, let’s talk about Abby Payne from Lake Travis HS, her team philosophy is Pride, Passion, and Discipline. I fully agree with her philosophy and seeing that’s how my high school team was run and how I plan on running my team one day. I also somewhat with her practice schedule 3 days a week at 7:30am and 2 at 7:00am with 2 days of tutoring for the team to see teachers. I agree and disagree with this because I feel like if you’re going to allow your team 2 practices at 7:30am the team should be almost ready to perform for the football game that week. I also agree with her worst problem with her team being that that parents are either too involved or not involved enough.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

Development is a crucial part of individual lives and there are many factors that can influence an individual’s development, and development can be different for everyone. There are many different theories around development, with two key theories being Erikson’s psychosocial theory and Vygotsky’s cognitive theory. Erikson’s theory focuses on solving internal conflicts, whereas Vygotsky’s concentrates on the zone of proximal development (ZPD), and assisting students in their learning. Teachers can take on a variety of roles, and the implications of this can be quite significant. In my last year of high school, I coached an intermediate football team.…

The first time I learned basketball was when I am at the 6th grade when my physical education teacher registered me in a basketball summer camp. I used to be a shy and quiet girl but since joining the summer camp I started to socialize and have friends. After two months of learning basketball, I began to like it. Then, I started playing basketball in high school as part of my school’s team and I’ve been playing ever since.
