Personal Narrative: My Experience At A Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic

Decent Essays
fter attending my externship at a psychiatric outpatient clinic, I have figured out what makes a good impression with them and what does not. I have learned a lot from this experience including how to pull charts, how to prioritize my time, customer service techniques, scheduling patients into multiple clinicians’ schedules, and many others. I will demonstrate how I will make a good impression at work in three ways. The first way I will make a good impression at work within my first 30 days is to make sure I show up on time or ten to fifteen minutes earlier every day. If I am running behind, call and let my supervisor know. In addition, I will make sure to leave up to an hour early, depending on where my job is, to ensure I make it on time as

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…

Like any other clinical experience, going into the Salvation Army I set goals for what I would achieve during my learning experience to focus my learning and enrich my knowledge base. My first personal goal was to go into the experience with an open mind and allow myself to learn more about this population and the people I would care for. This goal was achieved because I can talk about moments that I experienced that contributed to my growth of knowledge and awareness to this population. This goal was reached by sitting with multiple individuals over their meal and talk to them about their hardships and what they were going through. This allowed me to share my compassionate heart and listen to people who needed someone to talk to and hear about…

In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…

As I looked around at the blank white walls surrounding me, my anxiety only grew. Why am I here? The question haunted my mind as my solid white shoes tapped softly on the monotonously grey floors. My green eyes landed back on the paper in my hand, reading the words again. Patient 7539, please report to clinical area 3 for a checkup at 6:30am.…

X was a bright, ambitious and energetic person, and he was loved by everyone alike. After years of hard work, he’d gotten into law school and was finally living his dream he had struggled so long for. He was also my best friend. When I came back home from college that year, I was met with somber and anxious faces rather than smiles and hugs. Blankly, I looked at my father’s face when he broke the shocking news that X had passed away from a drug overdose.…

Cincinnati has always felt like home to me. Living in Indianapolis until college, I have made many trips to Cincinnati to visit family and friends. One thing I love about University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is that it is in a city is that has a very diverse population with a large African American community. As a Spanish minor, I know that language barriers can be huge obstacles to overcome. The Medical Spanish/Latino Health Elective program is a wonderful opportunity to help me to better provide culturally competent care.…

My interests in counseling is fuel by hurts and pain of people I observed throughout my lifespan. From the time I could speak, I saw family members, being taunted, by traumatic event that occurred throughout their lifespan. As I watched the hurt and pain of others consume them, I watch them suppressed the pain, in a harmful matter. For the future suppressing the pain, like substance abuse became an unconscious systematic coping method for stressors. Furthermore, as years progressed the hurt and pain presented itself through violence, verbal, and physical abuse.…

During my second clinical appointment I arrived at the interview feeling a little less anxious than I did when I met my client for the first time. I had spent the week reflecting on our interview and conversation and the positive feelings and assumptions I left the first clinical with. I learned during our pre-conference that having assumptions can be positive as long as you keep an open mind. Throughout the second clinical I realized some of what I had assumed and felt about her and her life was fairly accurate. I got the feeling from the manner she portrayed initially, that she had been married and had several children; whom she stayed home to raise.…

Let me tell you guys about Ginger Deli, okay. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, but I wouldn't know anything about that because I was scheduled to work from 2PM - 10PM in the health system. I was sad, in despair even, because it seems that on ALL the nice days I'm stuck inside. It was lunch time, a self-imposed time when I'm hungry, and I decided to go down stairs. The health system does these marvelous restaurant visits, so even if you don't get a chance to frequent the town, you can still enjoy it's quaint charm, usually with limited, but decent, options and honestly, it works for me.…

My first time in a mental institution It started out as a good day, I was happy but at the same time I could feel everything slowly slipping away from me. While I was at work my mood suddenly took a turn for the worst I decided to pick up a pair of scissors that were sitting there on my register. My first thought was maybe just a small cut and you’ll feel better, all you have to do is just cut once and everything will be fine, so I did but I couldn’t stop there…

The sickness that I live with is one that some would find excessively appalling, making it impossible to talk about; so I kept it to a whisper. This sickness I thought was to embarrassing to talk about, making it impossible to seek help, left me feeling alone in the dark. This sickness ruined friendships, without me realizing it. This sickness that made getting out of bed a struggle for me. This sickness made it impossible for me to see a positive future, until the day I stopped calling myself “crazy” and began to grow from what we all call, depression.…
