Personal Narrative: My Experience As An Instructional Coach

Working as an instructional coach for struggling schools can be a challenge; however, I have made great strides rising to any challenge and proving to be a high impact educator. My experience in education and instructional leadership is diverse. I have served on the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Standardized Testing and Assessment of Educational Progress Committee. With a focus on research and evidence-based practices in English Language Arts, I have conducted professional developments and facilitated professional learning communities. As a member of the literacy leadership team, I collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and community stakeholders to ensure that all students show learning gains and/or matriculate each year reading on or above grade level. At the school site, my leadership role is most centered on identifying best practices related to literacy instruction and serving as a resource in the selection of evidenced-based instructional and intervention/enrichment materials. Young Elementary (NBY) after working successfully as the Literacy Coach at Lenora B. Smith Elementary, a school that at was one of the lowest performing elementary schools in Miami-Dade County Public Schools when I first joined their team. Through dedicated work and service to Lenora B. Smith Elementary witnessed tremendous strides. In fact, the 2014 FCAT results earned the school a two letter-grade increase (F to a C) on Florida’s Grading System, an 18 proficiency point increase in reading moving the school to a record 48% proficiency and removal from the State’s Lowest Performing 300 Elementary Schools list.     After attending karate for 11 years, I have taken a weekly position teaching.
