Personal Narrative: My Experience As A ULN Mentor

Decent Essays
I am learning through experience by being a ULN Mentor for the UT class of 2020 and keeping a full time job as an overnight hotel receptionist. In one I am learning how to treat people, manage my time, and commit, while as a mentor I am working on understanding and guiding leaders of the same age as me.
From the first two weeks of being a mentor, I learned that it is difficult to mentor people that are relatively close to your own age. However, it's interesting and shocking when they take your advice or learn from your mistakes, and it’s very rewarding when they tell you how their week went and how a simple suggestions got them through a situation. I am surprised at the amount of pressure and difficulties that I went through in just two weeks.

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

Mentorship plays such an important role in all of our lives regardless of vocation and interests. Delving into history we see how many of the renowned innovators, actors, politicians, and business leaders were mentored during some stage of their lives. I can recall the names of a few mentor-mentee relationships I became aware of over time - Plato mentored by Socrates - David Letterman mentored by Peter Lassally - Warren Buffet mentored by Benjamin Graham – Steve Jobs mentored by Robert Friedland - Russell Crowe mentored by Tom Sharpin and Bill Gates mentored by Dr. Ed Roberts. Having participated in mentorship at both ends of the spectrum, I know firsthand about its benefits, which include maturity, focus, diligence, accountability and sustained…

Have you learned any leadership lessons along the way? My background as an entrepreneur and philanthropist has placed me in a better position to advice individuals that aspire to attain similar goals as mine. My number one advice to them is to adhere to socially conscious principals and stay on the path of pursuing goals that benefit large part of the society. I also believe prudent leadership is striking a balance by distributing time among all the worthy causes.…

I was very excited but also nervous about meeting my school mentor. I felt better once my SU mentor gave me background information on Mrs. Trotz, my school mentor. Mrs. Trotz recently got married and graduated from Stevenson University. I thought it was cool that she graduated from the school that I am currently attending. I couldn’t wait for Tuesday morning to finally meet Mrs. Trotz face to face at Carroltown Elementary School.…

An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

It is obvious that the predicted nursing shortage is now here. It was predicted that by 2018 there would be an increase in the demand for nurses by 22% (Cottingham, DiBartolo, Battistoni, & Brown, 2011, p. 250). This is now becoming a huge concern and nurses cannot afford to have retention problems. One study found that 35% of nurses that were not mentored left their positions (Fox, 2010, p. 311). A mentoring program could make a significant difference in the nurse turnover rate.…

In my high school career, I have participated in various activities. All I did was intended for fun but three of my activities not only benefited me in enjoyment, they helped others. I am a two-year member of National Honors Society, a three-year member of Student Council, and a student mentor. The mentoring program I am currently enrolled in happens to be the first year my high school has implemented this program. I met with assigned Freshman once a week, and one assigned sixth grader I met with twice a week.…

When I began Energy Express, I thought my role would be improving children's reading skills and helping them cultivate a passion for reading. However, throughout my summer of service I learned that the role of an Energy Express mentor is much greater. To mentor a child is to shape their personality and future, it is to help them grow to love learning and also to love themselves, it is to offer them hope and love since many children in this area struggle within untraditional family structures, and it is to teach them their potential is endless. Therefore, my three goals would be: cultivate a love for readnig through hands-on activities, provide a support, fun, and active enviroment that welcomes and comforts all children, and to build lasting, stable friendships among the children I mentor.…
