Whether it was taking time out of my day to attend the first general body meeting of debate team or filling out the application for National Society of Collegiate Scholars, I began my success by putting my foot out into the unknown without fully expecting what I was going to get out of it. Having the adventurous mind to try out new things has opened my mind greatly to leadership opportunities, service, scholarship, and social justice. Topics and initiatives that I would have never thought to be conversing about or partaking in are now major parts of my everyday life. Through NSCS and every other organization or club I’m a part of, I have become a more active, accommodating, and out spoken person. To a first generation college student, obtaining success in college can often seem like a daunting task and many might shrivel in fear of the expectations.…

Also by guiding students to commit to their own educational experience, develop their own set of morals and beliefs and establish goals for their future career. Lastly, it is important provide students with community to establish their identity as emerging adults, provide a safe living and learning environment, and a supportive community for growth, development, and self-exploration. I believe that my personal philosophy will continue to adjust and develop as I continuously work with students but it is important to be willing to adjust my approach to Student Affairs as both the field and the students are continuously changing and evolving.…

The college years are a time of important growth and change for students because they gain new ideas and experiences that could change what they already know and believe. No doubt, significant changes occur during the college years. Student development occurs “when students are faced with new challenges in their lives, a response or way to cope with the situation must emerge” (Sanford, 1966; as cited in Gardner, 2009, p. 15).…

Education is of the utmost importance and is often looked down upon by the younger generation of students in lower levels of education. Unfortunately for most students it is not until they attend a university do they really appreciate all that education has to offer them. The cost of education just continues to get higher for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, which sets them back further in their success upon graduation because of crippling student debt. It is pertinent that students, including myself learn to appreciate the free education that they are offered early on in their academic career. In addition, there needs to be more of an emphasis on learning the skills needed to succeed in college and how to manage the stress of…
