It was a Friday night around 7pm and I was asked by a co-worker to work her last four hours of her closing shift. I had heard the day before that it might not be a late night so I called the charge nurse from home around 5pm and asked if they were going to need me to come in. She said she had three RNs who were scheduled to be there until 7:30 pm and thought that they might not need me. She said they would call me at 7pm and let me know. I spoke clear and confidently about what I assessed. I told him that the RN prior to me had concerns that there might be a hematoma. He said that the RN had reported that there was a raised area near the incision that was painful and the size of a soft ball. I then let him know that I medicated the patient with the appropriate medication he had ordered and her pain was now a 2/10. I went on to report that the incision over her chest was not very large and it just looked like the battery.
