Personal Narrative: My Experience As A Proficient Registered Nurse

The Clinical situation that will be discussed in this narrative will portray my knowledge and skill set as a proficient Registered Nurse (RN). My many years of experience as a RN have allowed me to use clinical judgment, critical thinking , and advocating skills to play a vital role in my patient's care.
It was a Friday night around 7pm and I was asked by a co-worker to work her last four hours of her closing shift. I had heard the day before that it might not be a late night so I called the charge nurse from home around 5pm and asked if they were going to need me to come in. She said she had three RNs who were scheduled to be there until 7:30 pm and thought that they might not need me. She said they would call me at 7pm and let me know. I ended up getting a call from a RN saying that she had an outpatient patient who had a deep brain stimulator (DBS) placed who needed to stay until 8:30 to be seen by the PA who couldn't get back to the hospital until then. I spoke clear and confidently about what I assessed. I told him that the RN prior to me had concerns that there might be a hematoma. He said that the RN had reported that there was a raised area near the incision that was painful and the size of a soft ball. I then let him know that I medicated the patient with the appropriate medication he had ordered and her pain was now a 2/10. I went on to report that the incision over her chest was not very large and it just looked like the battery. The incision looked normal to me, when comparing it to past post-operative deep brain stimulator patients. I asked if he had any more concerns or if he would be comfortable with me sending her home. She was alert, had clear breath sounds, non- labored breathing, tolerable pain, her color was pink and she had a steady gait to the restroom.
