Background Nurses are challenged by the Institute of Medicine (2010) to practice to the fullest extent of their licensure and scope of practice in order to deliver results that will provide value to the healthcare consumer in a cost effective, customer satisfying, high quality and safe way. Understanding one’s ability to perform in the nursing leadership role requires insight and self-reflection. This exercise in the self-evaluation of learning, using the American Nurses Association’s scope and standards of practice, provides a platform for future educational actions that will enhance and help fulfill the greatest potential for one’s nursing practice. The following questions address the learning needs of this MSN student, and will serve to guide the Waynesburg University Practicum experience.…
Combining Nurse Leader With Advocacy Nurses have important role in health care setting. Advocacy for other nurses and profession create positive influence at workplace. Nurse’s role as a leader and advocate is very essential to provide safe and quality care to patients. “The IOM specifically recognizes the need for strong and capable leadership if the vision for transforming healthcare is to ever be realized. As a future register nurse and as a woman I feel that a have a tremendous responsibility to give back to my community. I believe that one of the most forgotten populations in our community is the elderly, and as a society we have so much to learn from them and to thank them for what they did in the past. I strongly believe that if I could make some positive changes I would decide to do them to influence some senior citizens’ lives and to change their isolation for companion and thankfulness. I would advocate for the elderly with our authorities and I would request a budget to build a clinic to provide preventive health care services for them. I would designate a budget to build a nursing home for the elderly that do not have a place to…
In terms of patient experience assisting frontline nurses whilst my mother was in hospital after a major surgery the task which involved transferring her to another bed in the next ward over via a wheelchair. The nursing staff and I were mindful of avoiding injury to staff and myself as well as the patient at the same time watching my posture plus doing manual handling procedures and guidance from the nurses. I performed the maneuverer correctly as I was able to advise the nurses to lower the trolley (bed) to the wheelchair height then lift the headrest forward so my mother is sitting upright before carefully moving her body onto the wheelchair in a one motion move by holding one side of her shoulders then pulling her gently and carefully towards…
For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of being a Nurse, specifically a Pediatric Nurse. It began when I was 8 years old, I was always sick. I had stomach problems and stayed in a Pediatric hospital for days, sometimes even weeks. During my times in the hospital, I became close with many of the doctors and nurses. I recall feeling upset at times, not scared.…
Mentor, is a kind of authority. Very rarely is an authority in every respect. There is also a difference between the professional mentor and moral mentor. It would be wonderful if these aspects went hand in hand, but this is rare.…
As a Registered Nurse, I begin my shift by accepting report from the previous nurse. I understand that I am orientating a new Licensed Practical Nurse who is almost complete with her orientation. I have three patients, and I am expecting a new admission from the Emergency Department, who presents with chest pain. My job is to delegate the appropriate patient or patients to a licensed practical nurse after I introduce myself and the LPN. It is very important for me to know how to prioritize the patient care.…

When I was a child and a lot of times during my adolescence I had several moments of indecision about the things that I wanted. From the simplest to the most complicated. And although it was hard to choose what to write or what flavor of ice cream to buy, I was always sure of one thing: I like to help people. That's why I chose nursing as my career to college because this was a way I found to realize my dream; being able to help my fellow man when he needs it most. Care, protect, guide and support anyone who needs, help others to face their fears and challenges, it is very rewarding!…
I admired the nurse that took care of my aunt up to this day and hold them in high respect. I invested hours in their office whenever I visited my aunt in the moments of her surgery or to pick up her medicines. Few years later, I had been volunteering at a local hospital, this made me fully realize the hard work nurses put in their work line. My overall experience with the nurses that I encountered was positive. In my senior of high school, I took a course on health and human anatomy.…
Clinical leadership education for nursing students: Shaping future clinical leaders Curtis et al. (2011, p.309) stated that clinical leadership is an important part of nursing practice which should be started ‘at the earliest stages of basic nursing education and training’. I propose to critically examine clinical leadership education for nursing students, overcoming barriers to clinical leadership education and developing future clinical leaders in the implementation for health care policy and practice I intend to publish this article in the Journal of Advanced Nursing and use Harvard reference style as stipulated in the ‘Author Guidelines’ of the Journal (see Attached Appendix). Key words clinical leadership, education, nursing students,…
I recall memories of my mother and I spending time together when I was younger. We talked about numerous things that led to discovering what type of person my mother is and who she wanted to be. Talking with her helped me learn who I wanted to be. I wanted to be just like her. The moment my mother told me she wanted to become a nurse, I decided that is who I wanted to become.…
