My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…
. I was a member of the First Year Involvement Program at ISU my freshman year, which helps first year students assimilate to college life by being active through many different events. I was selected to be an Emissary for the College of Education for the 2015-2016 school year. The Emissary program is designed to help first year students and I will be mentoring a select group of students and provide any support they need in their academic journey. I joined the P.E. Departments student club at Idaho State known as S.H.E.P.E.R.D’s in the spring of 2015, and I served as the club’s Secretary for the spring of 2015, Vice President for the fall of 2015, and I became club president in the spring of 2016 and currently hold the position.…
Mentor, is a kind of authority. Very rarely is an authority in every respect. There is also a difference between the professional mentor and moral mentor. It would be wonderful if these aspects went hand in hand, but this is rare.…
Everyone can say that they always imagined or wanted to look up to someone whether if the person was famous or related to them. Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. I didn’t want a mentor that was a few years older I always wanted someone that was almost twice my age, maybe even older than me. My mentor that I will be talking about name is James. James and I met at my job throughout my time working there I have worked with many managers.…
My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. Even though it may be a very small interaction, I feel like I have made a small difference in their lives and I have helped them somehow.…
At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…
In student council, the members and I bring ideas and make decisions to create a year-long calendar. We plan school events, such as prom, homecoming, and pep rallies, and projects to improve the school. As an event planner,…
I was very excited but also nervous about meeting my school mentor. I felt better once my SU mentor gave me background information on Mrs. Trotz, my school mentor. Mrs. Trotz recently got married and graduated from Stevenson University. I thought it was cool that she graduated from the school that I am currently attending. I couldn’t wait for Tuesday morning to finally meet Mrs. Trotz face to face at Carroltown Elementary School.…

One thing that I have been involved with is SkillsUSA through Francis Tuttle Technology center. SkillsUSA is an organization that teaches students on how to become a leader. I am a student ambassador for my cosmetology student body. My duties as a student ambassador include helping future students decide whether or not cosmetology is what they want to be certified in. I help out by asking their questions and giving them my personal opinion on the class and share some of my personal experiences.…
In my high school career, I have participated in various activities. All I did was intended for fun but three of my activities not only benefited me in enjoyment, they helped others. I am a two-year member of National Honors Society, a three-year member of Student Council, and a student mentor. The mentoring program I am currently enrolled in happens to be the first year my high school has implemented this program. I met with assigned Freshman once a week, and one assigned sixth grader I met with twice a week.…
The one time I was able to help someone is when I mentor a student at a local elementary school. When I am with the student, I am helping her out but in reality she’s helping me out so much more. I've done the mentoring program now for around five years. For the past four years I've had the same student and we have grown very close. She is from Hawaii, so she did not know very many people when she moved here.…
Demonstrate your level of involvement in activities and/or contributions to the University or Community. (Include professional organizations you belong to): I am co-president of the MSUM Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) group on campus. This group is a great way for students to get involved and to raise awareness about cancer. AS a group we put on 2-4 events throughout the year to raise cancer awareness and money for cancer research. For example, this fall I planned and put on a “Knockout Cancer!”…
Building a positive relationship with a mentor teacher has a positive impact on an early career teacher’s sense of personal resilience. Mentor teachers can provide a wealth of knowledge for pre-service teachers, like myself, as well as early career teachers (TeacherFeature AITSL, 12 August, 2012). This knowledge can be applied for managing challenging behaviour, designing lesson plans, or simply discussing ways to effectively assess students. On my practicum placement, I will be collaborating with my mentor teacher to discuss their perspectives on assessment, which assessment strategies they have already implemented this year, along with the effectiveness of these thus far. I will document this information on my e-Portfolio on ‘Mme Moe’ to…
The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? For a long time in my life I have felt like a failure.…
