We figured that my niece would have to see the error of her ways, get help, take classes, go to group therapy sessions, find a job and conquer her case plan. How long could that possibly take six months? The good news was that my sister who is the children’s Grandmother would be there to help us, getting the babies from daycare and coming home to help out while I juggled homework. We had it all planned out. My father, husband and I took turns taking my niece to her court dates and classes.…

Last summer, I worked near the US District Court in Hartford and often stopped in to watch hearings and bench trials. As Political Science and Philosophy of Law student, I had read about the workings of the American justice system, but I had never actually seen it up close. In many ways, it was exactly as I expected: I knew who played which roles in the proceedings, I understood most of the legal terms, and I had usually read the facts of the case and procedural history on PACER before the hearing. One thing I did not know to expect, however, was the remarkable professionalism, curtesy, and preparedness the Assistant US Attorneys. I knew that AUSAs were talented lawyers and that their positions were highly competitive, but their quick and…

Despite all my hard work, I was unable to find myself a place in the top 10%. This has hurt my appearance to colleges, but I hope that with these explanations of what I had to go through freshman and sophomore year, my position will be slightly more understandable. Engineering honors is the best thing for my future and everything I want to do with my life. Honors will help me grow as a student, so I can be a better employee and will help me grow as a person.…

I headed into the courtroom of Judge Thomas Marcelain to observe my first courtroom trial. The trial involved a 31-year-old man named, Daniel Bohanna, of Pataskala. Mr. Bohanna decided to represent himself in his trial for fear of misrepresentation. He was charged with rape, kidnapping, and felonious assault. I have seen footage on T.V. from famous trials and of course seen reenactments from Hollywood, but I have never been to one in person until now.…

It is 7:23 a.m. on a Thursday morning, the pass allowing tardiness to first hour is tucked away in my tattered blue backpack. I sit in my car gazing at the quiet building. I have seven minutes to make it up the staircase, adorned with two lamp posts. I, along with many others, have visited Morgan Federal, the bank across the street, countless times and never realized just what was in the vicinity. A friend who works next door in the courthouse suggested I profile this place and gave the directions: “It’s in the old jail,” as if that was a common reference automatically understood.…

The job I was interested in was a judge, specifically a Supreme Court judge. The duty of the supreme court judge is to finalize laws involving Congress and making sure The Constitution is still followed. It keeps the laws in order and makes sure that equality is reached. According to Scholastic "The Role of the Supreme Court," "The Supreme Court is like a referee on a football field. The Congress, the President, the state police, and other government officials are the players.…

My curiosity in law peaked right around eighth grade. My English class had been reading Monster, a novel written by Walter Dean Myers concerning a teenage boy in juvenile detention and on trial. My interest in legal studies has led me to researching a well-known, yet underestimated, career choice--a prosecuting attorney. A prosecutor is also referred to a district attorney, but is completely different from a defense attorney. While defense attorneys represent an individual client in attempt to prove their innocence, prosecutors represent the state with hopes to convict the client as guilty.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…
