Personal Narrative: My Experience As A 4-H Extension Agent

Improved Essays
The first day I began as a county 4-H Extension Agent was January 23, 2010. As I began my new adventure with WVU Extension Service, my guiding principle was and continues to be this desired outcome: youth led by knowledgeable and caring adults learn and mature so that ultimately youth become caring and skilled citizens involved in their communities.
Highlights and accomplishments of Kanawha County’s 4-H program include:
• 4,797 youth and adults attended an education program by the Kanawha County 4-H program in 2016.
• 210 Kanawha County youth participated in summer camping programs including Kanawha county day and residential camps, and state camps.
• 2,178 youth received nutrition education yearly through the Family Nutrition Program.

Selected adult volunteers complete the vetting process, including job descriptions and the new county online training. From the results of the online training and camper survey results from the following year, the final training occurring the day of camp reinforces the policies and information identified as poorly understood by the counselors based on the online quiz results and goes over the program, risk management, and job duties.
Each year camp is designed so that youth have the opportunity for leadership, responsibility, and caring for others. Camp theme, schedule, and programming are selected by the teen leaders in the beginning stages of camp planning. From there, these teen leaders work with the camp volunteers to determine the best methods to integrate the camp thematic program with tenets of WVU camping practices. Teen leaders are also selected to be camp counselors as younger residential and day camps. The teens complete camp counselor training—both online, day of training and an additional training workshop a month prior to camp. Teen counselors assist younger youth in tribal duties, in being away from home, in making new friends, and in completing camp duties assigned to them. Campers become the tribal

After every week of camp the goals are reevaluated and written reports are submitted online as well as printed out and handed out to the families to take home. We also print an additional copy and place it into the camper file for future references. Each counselor provides an oral report to the campers parents when they get picked up about how the camper was throughout the week as well as what they did. Additional reports that are completed are done by our directors and they are written after every camp season about the overall quality of camp experience. When the goals are set for the week they are then shared among the departments and are reviewed during the weekly Monday meetings.…

On my one and only vacation last summer, I got the privilege on going to my first Younglife camp. The camp name was Carolina Point in Brevard, North Carolina. At the camp they had many activities: swimming, go-carting, disc golf, mountain biking, zip-lining, paddling boarding, and hiking. My favorite part about this trip was the day we took a whole camp trip to hike the nearby mountain. At the camp they had some kids with disabilities that couldn’t necessarily get up the mountain by themselves.…

Even though campers’ loss one field trip, later in the camp season, a private funder gave money to support the trip. By alleviating the task of staff from having to ride the bus in the morning and afternoon, they were able to plan accordingly for daily lessons, converse with peers about needed issues with campers and feel productive as instructors. By changing this small issue, the quality of service for campers was not interrupted but enhanced by giving staff the necessary time needed to be…

I want to be in the Leader's In Training program because Camp Mendocino is teaching youth how to live a healthy life at a young age. This camp helps the upcoming youth live in reality instead of the virtual world and ties into my overall life goal of helping Americans understand what it means to live a healthy life physically and mentally. This is important to me because I have dealt with depression and how unhappy I was with myself as a person. From the negative experience I’ve had with depression I don't want any child or teen feel like they are unworthy of the life they are living. By working with Camp Mendocino I will be helping the youth understand how to have a healthy state of mind by encouraging campers to deal with negative feelings…

The Appalachia Volunteers Program is a yearlong program than includes weekly Sunday night meetings based on the program’s mission “to love, learn, and serve” and culminates in a weeklong service trips to the Appalachian region and beyond. Through both the meetings and my experiences on these service trips I have gained new perspectives and learned more about myself than I had ever thought possible and I will be forever grateful for that. Love is all around. The Appalachia Volunteers Program introduced me to the concept of agape, and showed me this unconditional, selfless love first hand.…

Funding is at the root of all major decisions affecting public education today. With or without funding, every teacher is tasked with providing students with a quality education. Fortunately for Randolph County, leaders intentionally appropriate funds to provide students with a wide-selection of course offerings that will help propel them in the direction of their chosen career. Whether our students dream of being in the medical field, computer field, contributing to North Carolina’s agricultural history, being the next musician, artist, or even a teacher, we offer it all. Unfortunately, other schools in North Carolina and across the country are not equally equipped to offer the vast array of courses and opportunities.…
