My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

One’s identity is who they truly are as a person. People don’t define you. you define yourself. You define yourself with your actions, personality, and the roles you play in other people’s lives. At this point in my life I’m still trying to figure out who I am.…

It was a typical warm and humid day in central Florida. There was a storm for-cast as usual, there was never a day without one. I sat there in my Mission President’s office waiting for my appointment with him. I had just gotten examined by the mission nurse and things were not looking good for my case of staying on my mission. My diagnosis was a severe case of Psoriasis, the most severe that the Missionary Department in Salt Lake City had ever seen in all the years of operation.…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

Like a storm, my world has been shaky and damaged, but when it all comes down to it, in the end there will be a clear sky and maybe even a rainbow. Fights, divorce, prison, home, prison, house arrest, and amongst it all, the lies are all a part of my world. Everyone has their own little world, consisting of the people close to and around them, mainly consisting of their family. In my own little world I have my dad, my mom, my Grandma Janet, and my four siblings Erin, Lillian, Stevie, and my half-brother Stetson. The world you come from will affect your dreams and aspirations in a way, but no matter what kind of family you come from, that doesn't have to define you as a person because I have overcome the idea that it has to establish who I…

One personal challenge I've endured occurred when my brother and father were placed in mental hospitals. As my first year of high school came to a close, both my brother and father wound up in mental hospitals within the same month. A domino effect, my brother first and my father not long behind. My brother was in his last year of high school, one day during class something switched off in his head. The reasoning behind it remains a mystery even to him.…

As all of us might know, being residents of California, an earthquake can be a terrifying thing small or big. Losing assurance from the ground, something we never think about, but always rely heavily on, can really have traumatic affect one’s self. For as long as I can remember, my core family was made up of my three older brothers, my dad, and last but not least my beloved mother. They were my ground who I rarely thought about but relied on constantly. However, my world shook when I heard there was going to be a new addition to the family.…

Have you ever wished that you had listened to your mom or dad when they asked you to promise to not do something or go somewhere? Well, that reminds me of the time when my mom said “Promise to come straight home from school, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars, come straight home right after school, and make sure you put on a helmet”. I know that I will never break a promise to my mom again. It was a hot summer day after school.…
