Personal Narrative: My Educational Story

Improved Essays
My educational story started a long time ago in Bogota, Colombia. Being one of four children in a low socioeconomic class made it difficult for my parents to afford a college education for all of us. My older brothers were in the engineering school, which was expensive, stretching my parent's pockets and, reducing the possibility for them to pay for my college tuition. When I was finishing high school, I looked at my different possibilities to pay for my education without having to resort on my parent’s money. I found out about a grant that a prestigious university offered to high school students with the best high school grades, and the best scores in the ICFES test (similar to the ACT test in North America). I wanted to learn English. I was going to an adult education school after work, but my teachers were Spanish speakers. they tried to teach me English but using Spanish words. That made my goal of learning English almost impossible to achieve. I also was working in a Spanish speaking company, and at home, we always would speak in Spanish. I started to realize that in the environment I was so deeply intertwined in, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to learn English. I started looking for possible solutions to overcome this challenge. After some time, I came up with the solution: since Spanish was the only language I was using in Miami, I did not have the need to learn English to communicate. I knew that I would need to challenge myself in another environment. The solution was to move to a city where I was forced to learn English to be able and communicate. I started to seek out different possibilities like Huston, New York, Los Angeles and Louisville. I realized that Louisville was the city where there were less Spanish speakers. I thought it would be a great city for me and my kids and would propel me to learn English; therefore, I decided to move to Louisville. After moving, I started going to school, taking English classes and interacting in the daily living activities with English speakers. due to this, I overcame this educational

I was ten years ago and I can still vividly remember sitting on an old, wooden rocking chair while the words of The Very Hungry Caterpillar trembled off my lips to a room full of second graders. I can recall the eagerness and excitement that filled their little faces as I flipped from page to page. There was an abundance of curiosity and desire to learn in that classroom that made me happy that I decided on skipping recess to read to the younger students. There was a fire that lit in my ten-year-old body that day. That was the day where I finally had an answer to all the “What do you want to be when you grow up?”…

When I was in six grade, my PE coach made it clear to me that I wasn't alone, and I could accomplish anything I put the time and effort into. He was the football coach for Atascocita middle school. An African American in his late 20s, very friendly, and Guidable when it came to his students. On the first day of school as a new student with no knowledge of the language, I was extremely terrified to transform from speaking different language, and having a similar set of friends into an inexperienced world and dissimilar students who I had absolutely nothing in common with. Fortunately, I had my brother as a personal translator throughout the year.…

Semester of Learning Experiences People most always say, “ Learn from you mistakes and achievements.” I would definitely conclude that is exactly what I’ve done this first semester of college. There are many times that I wanted to simply curl into a ball because of all the newness and unfamiliarity. At times I found myself doing just that, but realizing that I needed to toughen up burst from my comfort zone. I can say sleeping through your classes never the best choice, not going just because you find it too easy, missing a class just to write a paper for another class, and differentiating between minimal and highly important status of choices.…

Rodriguez barely spoke any English at the time, but his teachers kept pushing him to learn it and speak it in class. He would’ve felt more comfortable if they had addressed him in Spanish, but he remarks that “Fortunately, my teachers were unsentimental about their responsibility. What they understood was that I needed to speak a public language” (Rodriguez, 27-28). In order to learn English, he had to step outside of his comfort zone and give up the emotional connection he had with Spanish, but it benefited him immensely in the long run. Although at first Rodriguez resisted his teachers’ efforts, he eventually accepted that he needed English as a public language to communicate with the people around…

The life I lived whenever I was younger is drastically different than the one I live today. As a child, I was raised on a farm in Scott County with my mother, father, and older brother. My father worked as a farmer, and my mother resided at home with a modest job on the side. We traveled several times a year, whether it be a brief commute to Colorado, or a plane trip to Mexico, we did so together. Although we were a blessed family, only a few years later our lives would be altered drastically.…

My mother throughout my whole life has provided me with a sincere love of learning, which has affected my whole life. I can remember times when we went on our group nature walks to learn about nature. While on those nature walks, we learned about plants, trees, animals, and we even searched for bugs to collect! Also we would go out at night and look at the spectacular stars and even study the stars’ constellations or maybe even try to find owls while they were up at night and discover what type of owl they were by the sound of their hoot. We would visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and discover beauty and talent and learn about who these artists were and their life stories.…
