While being in this class the first week had taught me a lot about the Kaplan University learning concept.

My primary thoughts towards Gordon College were created during a prospective student day. It turned out to be a negative experience that created a pessimistic view of this school and carried on my cynical view of Christians. It’s important because had I continued with my previous bias I would have attended a secular college which may have been a positive experience but would have definitely lead to a drastically different life.…

“I know applying to colleges is the last thing you want to do right now, but you might change your mind,” a trusted friend told me. It was December of my senior year of high school, and college application deadlines were approaching quickly. I was recovering from a major illness at the time, and wasn’t ready to think about college. My plan was to spend a year living at home and working before I pursued higher education. In the following months, my recovery progressed rapidly.…

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

The students of Mt. Hood Community College campus are the most diverse that I’ve ever encountered. Before I moved here, I resided in Nevada, the people there tended to look more alike. It ordinarily comes as a shock when I say that Nevada isn’t diverse, but it is the truth. My hometown has a fairly new identity; it’s still finding it. A majority of my life was spent there, in addition to a handful of other places.…

“It’s a great college, but it's not the best place for me”. This is what I tell my peers when they ask why I am considering transferring to another college. Wheaton College is an extraordinary school with some of the brightest students and most knowledgeable professors in the nation. Deciding where I wanted to attend college and what I wanted out of my college experience was an immense amount of pressure placed on the shoulders of my then eighteen-year-old self. In the end, Wheaton College won out over all of my other options for several reasons.…

My first year of high school was winding down, teachers had covered all learning material, and most students were preparing for finals. June had just begun, and along with studying, I had an upcoming saxophone recital for which I had been preparing since April. The Tuesday before my recital, I had my second to last lesson with my teacher, Fred Scerbo, before the recital on Sunday. I was preparing a piece by Charlie Parker named "Anthropology". Despite its difficulty, I felt that I would be able to perform it well.…

At this time of night it seems to be a completely different place from the normal, busy, and populated daylight scene. Now, it provides peace and serenity for any stressed college student to think about the day or whatever they want. There's no worries about getting lost since the campus is a circle, this makes it very easy to just zone out and think about whatever. My educational goals after high school are to attend the University of Phoenix- online. Going online will eliminate the costs of living on campus and other costs. Online schooling will also take the stress of leaving my family away because I will only be minutes away instead of hours. My plan is to graduate from college in four years and then start my career as a social worker as soon as possible. The reason I chose this career is my father and my brother’s dad.…

As a youth I faced numerous challenges that resulted in me beginning my educational journey later than expected. Growing up my father, an immigrant from Honduras, sold narcotics out of our home which had a lasting effect on me after he was later deported which also created a slew of issues for me as a youth. As a result of the traumatic experiences that I had witnesses and endured, I dropped out of high school as the stresses of living in such a dangerous environment were too distracting at the time to focus in school. Though my father was deported after I had dropped out of school, I quickly faced an array of issues after he was deported that further hindered me attending school, as I did not have a safe place to sleep, or stay at as our house…

The pursuit of higher education has been an important part of shaping me as a person and has always held great value to me. When I started college at New York Institute of Technology in the fall of 2007 I was a mix of excited and nervous because I had left my country (Jamaica) to move to the United States to attend college, but I knew that I had so much to learn and was excited for the opportunities that would await me. My freshman year was a great experience and I thrived in my new environment however, due to financial difficulty I was unable to start my sophomore year in 2008. This was very disheartening for me and I wondered if I would be able to complete my degree.…
