Personal Narrative: My Education At Savanna High School

I am currently a sophomore student at Savanna High School. During my freshman year, I was ranked number 1 in the class of 2018. But my success did not happen just overnight. I grew up in a country of the Philippines, and I was ten years old when I first came to the United States. Living in a country where there’s no guarantee of success was a challenging for me. I have a big family with four brothers and one sister. I never thought how living in America would drastically change my life. I remember when I first came into the U.S., I did not know how to speak English. English was one of the subject where I always struggle with. For summer time, I tried reading books as I try to improve my reading level. By the beginning of 7th grade, I was reading at an 8th grade level. The reason was I had perseverance. I did not give up just because I was put in a lower class. I stayed in my own lane knowing that if I put in the work, eventually I’ll get there. At the end of my Junior High School, a had 4.0 grade point average. This success would eventually translate to my first year of High School at Savanna.Throughout the past few years, I have become a mature and confident student who is able to balance school work, sports, and band. During my freshman year, I did not know what to expect. I was worried that I would not be able to fit in with other students, but I was able to make good friends right away. I transfer at this school because most of my family have graduated from Savanna. Since my brothers and cousins have become an alumni, I want to keep the tradition going by attending at this school. My first year has been a blast. I’ve joined clubs, sports, and playing drums in Savanna Jazz Ensemble while maintaining a 4.0 all year.
