July 22, 2012 was one of my favorite days of my life, it was the day we won the Gopher State Baseball Tournament. We got to take a coach bus up to target field and walk on the field with all the other age groups that also won. On the way up no one could sit still we were all exhilarated to be on a Major League Baseball field. But before we get to that, we should start at the beginning of the season and the state tournament. It was my first year of Royals baseball…
You would think people who have next to nothing in their lives, would want everything they could have their hands on. After spending a week with people who had less then me, I understood that I was completely wrong. I learned that people who have nothing are the most caring and empathetic. The people who lived at the camp we were staying at, greeted us with open arms and warm hearts. As a mission team, we were obviously caring people.…
Last Sunday, the Buccaneers escaped with a win against the New York Giants. Kicker Nick Folk grazed a 34-yard field goal to knock off the Giants 25-23 and send them to 0-4. Folk had previously missed two other field goals and an extra point in the game. The Buccaneers have the New England Patriots on Thursday in Tampa.…
Honestly, I’ll come right out and admit that I have never been the Detroit Lion’s number one fan, or any football fan for that matter. Sure, I had technically gone to each of the homecoming games both years in high school, but only for the sole excuse of being able to put some red war paint on my face and attempt to catch up with some friends. The only exposure I had to the sport was walking through the doors of Phase Three during cross country season. Day after day, I was forced to push through groups of teenage guys reeking with a putrid stench of dried sweat, rotting eggs, and grass stains; the smell in itself was enough to make my eyes water.…
We were playing a team from Oklahoma City in the World Series championship. My trip to Colorado changed my life. It was the most enjoyable experience I've ever had. I'll never forget that week. I woke up that morning feeling good, I threw on my retro jersey (our championship jersey)…
“RUN!” screamed my brain. “It 's the MiBs! The FEDS! Black SUVs will be at our door in minutes!” I pushed down the adrenaline surge and forced myself to remain calm.…
I believe that the motto “Once a Falcon, Always a Falcon,” is a perfect motto to describe myself as both a person and student. Growing up, I always took pride of my hometown (Vermilion, Ohio). My hometown, paired with the rollercoaster of experiences I endured throughout middle school and high school, made me who I am today. Granted, there were hard times and struggles, but I would not be where I am today had I not grown from those experiences. As I stated in my application, I represented my school and hometown at the 2013 Buckeye Boys Convention.…
Friona has many unique events that distinguish us from the many other bijou towns all around it. There’s the cheeseburger festival, which, being the “cheeseburger capital of the Texas”, is a must. They have Maize Days to celebrate their community’s people and businesses. And then there’s Friona High School’s own Chieftain Challenge that, like its name states, challenges its students. The Chieftain Challenge began with a couple of students trying to come up with a good idea for their Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) project.…
McKeesport isn't one of the greatest places to live. In fact, it’s probably one of the worst in Allegheny County. After the decline of the Pittsburgh-region’s steel industry and the influx in gang activity, McKeesport became a cesspool of death, poverty, and demoralization. I moved to McKeesport when I was three. Growing up, McKeesport was always a depressing and discouraging environment.…
Have you ever had that one co-worker who pushed you to do your best every day? Phil Wolf has inspired me to work hard, follow my dreams, and push myself. The first time I met Phil I was very intimidated by his handle bar mustache and cowboy accent. To add to that it was the first time I ever had to meet a new co-worker.…
The Hunted I didn’t know who I was. I woke up next to a bunch of muddy kids. They all smelled like they haven't showered in weeks. There was two twins, a chubby kid, and probably the skinniest kid I’ve ever seen. Then I realized I smelled just like them.…
A weakness that I have is that I do not know how to say no to individuals that ask me for help since I love to help people. It is important that I learn to say no when helping others gets in the way of me accomplishing my tasks. It is important that I do both, but not when I run the risk of not meeting my deadlines and me staying late hours after work to get my work done. It has not been an easy task saying no, but I am learning to be okay with saying no because it is important that it does not interfere with my responsibilities.…
One of my most meaningful service experiences was my Eagle Scout project. One of the requirements for obtaining the rank of Eagle is that the Scout must complete a service project that benefits the community; my project was to fundraise, organize, and oversee construction of a new pavilion at the Fowler Center for Outdoor Learning, a special needs camp, near Mayville, MI. The Fowler Center is a non-profit organization and a year round camp for kids with special needs. One of their programs, Outpost, is a 2-week camping experience that’s mainly geared toward campers with autism. The Fowler Center was in need of a new pavilion at their campsite for the campers to utilize for activities such as meals and games.…
My ears were ringing like a bell. I got interviewed by a few reporters. They asked me how I knew what they were doing, and I said that I studied game film and saw them stacked, and I knew one of the wide receivers was coming in. I intercepted the ball. As we were on the float, we get the trophy, and we went into the locker room happy…
Last time, we talked a little bit about the houses in astrology and what they mean. (Also, if you go to that link, you’ll find the previous astrology lessons rounded up, as well.) This time, we’re going to go into a bit of a basic overview of the planets and more importantly, why we look at them. I think everyone’s seen the “It’s in the stars” statements or “What do your stars have to say?”…
