Personal Narrative: My Duty Day

Decent Essays
Considering the busy schedule, last minute priorities, family, and civilian education, I really don’t have much time in a day to deal with all that and then reflect on how everything is going. Class and my students take priory of my schedule and during the duty day, everything else I prioritize by suspense date and gravity of the issue. I do have some great coworkers that I discuss my problems and frustrations with, which is a great outlet and it does allow me to reset and not lose my mind. Generally, I take Saturday’s a down day to where I just hand out with my family at home or we go out to visit places in the surrounding area.

As I mentioned in the previous assignment, I want to increase my baseline 500 steps each week so that by the end of the semester I am recording 10,000 steps which is in the active range. I will continue walking around the property at work and stepping in place whenever I possibly can. I will stick to walking to the mailbox which is two blocks from home as opposed to driving up to it on my way home. If I have days where I am tired I will just give myself another pep talk. I have a pretty good support system thus far so I will lean on them if pushing myself on my own does not cut it.…

Back in the days of yore, when I still walked the soft warm grass of my homeland, back when the great ice storm was still fresh in the minds of men, I lived in a trailer in the country, between Cridersville and Wapakoneta. I had a lot of free time and not many friends to talk to, save for Lucas who lived all the way in Buckland. I spent the majority of my free time at my neighbor’s house. My neighbors were the most ignorant gun toting Americans I’ve ever known.…

My first duty station was at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. I felt 10 feet tall walking into the S-1 for in processing with my green dress uniform but tall that motivation went down the drain, the ghost of my language barrier and jokes about height continue hunting me. Once again, jokes about my accent and height were my daily treatment by many of the Soldiers. There was not a single day that my Sergeant did not listen to a complaint from me about my experience, but he provided resilience and challenges me not let those comments discourage me from reaching my goals. He set me up for two goals, winning the Soldier of the Quarter and earning my first badge, the Air Assault Badge.…

My first major mission, a young 18 year old, the lead gunner behind a M240B as the first line of defense for our platoon; would soon be a situation that left an imprint in my life and has forever changed how I now lead as an NCO. This mission took place in 2007 near the city of Ad Dawr, Iraq. The mission was complex but my orders were simple, protect the convoy and provide security. The main objective was to expose and detain (if possible) a cell leader to include destroying his know cache point. Although the mission it-self went rather well a series of events would soon unravel and would give me a new perspective on how stress and a very political time in the war would make even the best of leaders fold under pressure.…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

Soldier Up I came into this world way ahead of schedule at 28 weeks weighing only 2 pounds, 2 ounces. Prior to my delivery, the doctor told my mom I would have a 50/50 chance for survival. However, I would most likely be petite, have a failure to thrive, possible intellectual disabilities and may also be blind. All my mother heard was, “...there was a chance…” She prayed to God to let me live and be healthy, and He could do whatever he wanted with me.…

Thursday Morning Imagine spending seven to nineteen months in a small twelve by sixteen room. Imagine having eight middle-aged, stinky guys for roommates. Imagine beds so small that you can barely stretch your feet out to get comfortable, not that you could anyway, because the mattresses were harder than cement blocks. Imagine the beds being bunk beds, with no steps or ladders, not even a stool to help you climb to the top bunk. You simply jump up and hope for a safe landing.…
