Personal Narrative: My Dropping Out Of College

Improved Essays
I almost dropped out of college. The third week of school I received my first grade on a college assignment. I got a D. For someone who is somewhat of a perfectionist and has never received a D in their life this came as a shock. Subsequent to receiving this a slight meltdown and phone call to my mother ensued. I told my mother that I did not think college was for me, and that I wanted to drop out. My mother and I both knew that no matter how serious I may have sounded or how foolproof my backup plan was that I would not actually drop out of college. As a perfectionist, being a college dropout did not exactly align with the high expectations I set for myself. I would like to say this is the only time I called my mom in tears, but that is not …show more content…
Personally, I enjoyed writing the papers for English 101 more because the personal narrative and profile paper were two of my favorites. Whereas, the papers for English 102 were also very interesting to write, but required a lot more research and effort. I found the causal argument to be especially challenging at first. One thing that was often noted by my peers, Cassidy and Kylie, and Dr. Tait was incorrect formatting on works cited and in text citations. Some of my other classes use APA format, and I was putting the year instead of the page number which was noted by Cassidy and Kylie. Both of my peers and Dr. Tait noted that I had some good rebuttals in my arguments. Dr. Tait also commented that in my papers for English 101, I had strong introductions that helped draw in the audience. Both Kylie and Cassidy noted that I needed a better conclusion to my cover letter. This was very helpful as I was having some difficulty formulating a conclusion. Sometimes Cassidy would make a comment that a portion of a paragraph or sentence did not make sense, or was being misinterpreted. This allowed me to realize that my information to the audience needed to be presented in a different way. One frustrating thing about the peer edit process, was not everyone in my group would turn things in on time, or complete edits and rough drafts. Occasionally, I would only have one person edit my work, so I did not receive as much feedback. After reviewing all of my feedback, I have learned that I still need to be extra cognizant of mla formatting concerning in text citations and the works cited page. Additionally, I still make various grammatical errors and sometimes my sentences need to be restructured in a way that makes the point more clear to the audience. It is always important for an individual to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses in order for growth and progress to be

I walked into the familiar main entrance of the school, crossing my arms and setting my face into what I thought was an intimidating glare. Although I looked like an angry toddler, with my round face and childish glower, my attitude came across very clearly: I was not happy at all to be back at school. After getting into a huge fight with my friend group earlier that year, I was starting high school essentially friendless. It wasn’t as if I didn’t have another group of people to fall back onto.…

Every time a due date would come up for a major assignment, we took time to review each other’s work. I do not remember much from these various encounters, but I do remember receiving helpful comments. Granted, I may have felt upset by some of the things said, but I knew that the criticism I had received was right, and I wanted to do better because of the evaluations. This was unusually for me because before this course, I would hardly listen to others since I thought I was always right. Yet, that changed because I wanted to improve my writing, and to do that I had to listen to other people’s ideas.…

One of my responders really gave me some helpful advice on where my paper was lacking some information and how to better organize my paper, which I think will definitely incorporate throughout my paper. It was also quite evident that she had read through the article I wrote my paper on because throughout her response she was giving me examples of information I could incorporate into my paper. On the other hand, I felt that my second peer responder was harsher in the sense that she was critiquing my style of writing and trying rewrite my paper instead of giving me her opinion on my paper. Overall, even though I was not satisfied with one of my peer responders editing, I still feel that this peer response experience was beneficial to myself and my writing…

Even though my contributions to the intellectual life of the class might have not been the best I believe that they were helpful not only to me but to some of my peers. Specifically in the peer reviews, I felt that those were crucial to the class, because every student had the opportunity to read and analyze another’s paper. By giving helpful criticism to someone else 's paper we were all receiving a new view into the type of essay we needed to be writing, therefore giving our own essays a new point of view to revise with. Consequently, peer reviews helped me learn to communicate better because I really wanted to give constructive criticism that my peers would find helpful towards improving their essays, so that I could also receive some in exchange. For example in the last essay I wrote one of the critics that I had was that one of my paragraphs was all wrong and that it really just did not mean much.…

In almost all of my papers I wanted to the last minute to mention the rebuttals to my suggested ideas. This made my papers evidence weak, causing my paper to lose credibility. I wish I was better at introducing and countering my opposing viewpoints for each paper. Another thing I need to improve on is my peer review and editing skills.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
