Personal Narrative: My Dream Of George Brown

Decent Essays
What brought me to George Brown College is my dreams. First of all, I never thought of being a Computer Programmer in the future. When I was a child I always dreamt of being a Police officer, so that I can save and catch all the criminals in the world, but as I grew up and reach high school level my way of thinking changed. My desire of being a police officer disinterested me when I started living alone back in my third year of high school, I always feel lonely that every night I wouldn't sleep without crying. My aunt is coming home from work every weekend, so most of my weekdays after school I spend it at home alone and the only thing I have is my computer. My computer saved me from everything, from loneliness, boredom, and from school

When I visited George Washington my sophomore year of high school, I instantly knew that your school is where I wanted to go for college. It just wasn't like any of the other colleges that I had seen before, and for that matter it was unlike any I have seen since. I saw that GW is in a beautiful location and that its presence in the capitol greatly enhances both its value and the city’s around it. I really liked walking around the campus, as it was extremely vibrant. I saw that safety is also important, and the combination of security that holds jurisdiction in this area is extremely reassuring.…

Visions are only unique as the individual themselves who make up this country. America is not the same as it was ten years ago. Who would have thought that we would have cell phones that were similar to a small computer in our pocket, a car that could talk back to us, or that we would have an African American president? Our visions for America could change everyday. My vision for America is very unique for my age group.…

Not everyone can say they carry a map of where they live wherever they go. This is one of the few perks that come with residing in the Mitten State: I can whip out my hand anytime and point to exactly where I’m from. For the past eighteen years, I’ve built a life in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a conservative, affluent community where everything seems perfect. For eighteen years, I’ve covered imperfections, censored thoughts, and allowed my light to be dulled. I may not have lived anywhere else yet, but the real-world is out there waiting -- and I’m ready for it.…

Today, I received the most disheartening news: I deserve no rights as a person. For years, white men have continued to oppress my fellow African-American slaves. Even my slave master, Dr. John Emerson, kept me under his hold until his death a few years ago. He dragged me away from Missouri to Illinois, Wisconsin, and full circle to Missouri. In my knowledge, Illinois and Wisconsin prohibit owning slaves, and yet I was still not free.…

So carefully, after waiting until I knew Ma wasn’t going to wake up, I crept outside into the winter air that was as cold yet placid, and began to walk to the harbor. Walking along the main street that lead straight to where the Sons of Liberty, and my Pa, were gathering before going to the harbor. The location was unknown to anyone outside of the Sons of Liberty, but Pa had spoken to a fellow Son of Liberty and I just happened to hear every word, including the location of the meeting. It wasn’t until I spotted a redcoat when I realized that the redcoats would for sure get me in trouble me if they spotted me past the 10:00 pm curfew.…

Imagine living in a world where you are seen as trash or are disparaged against, your people are being tormented not because of a crime or a horrific action taken by ancestry but because of a physical attribute. This is what the African Americans went through for almost 250 years therefore we are supposed to just accept what the so called land of freedom made of our ancestors, and bask in the glory of America on its day of independence. I find this difficult, for if not the actions taken by the African Americans, and pro freedom whites, we would still be in slavery to this day. In all of the Americas history a mass outbreak of slavery has happened twice and each time the vaccine took years to bring any sign of change. First it was…

By the age of ten, I had developed a robust enthusiasm for the field of American history. Visits to my grandparents apartment in our hometown of Hempstead, Long Island would often lead me across the the street to the public library. It was there where I developed my bibliophilic nature. This was how I sojourned — it was through the bookshelves of history that I learned about topics ranging from the great Hannibal of Carthage and his legendary achievements in the Second Punic War to memorizing Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address to diving deeply into King’s theory on nonviolence coupled with the SCLC’s strategy to win equal rights for our people. This was my escape from the cacophonous noise that was my world, from all the things I would see or feel and yet could not comprehend.…
