Our Foster dog almost died, was diagnosed with either/both leukemia and a stomach blockage of some sort, and then made a full recovery. We had a chance to have him put down, but I decided to give him more time and brought him home from the hospital with a prescription for Prednisone, which was expected to extend his life by maybe another 6 weeks. I have always had pets, from small hamsters to dogs. Back home (Brazil), I have two Golden Retrievers (Lucky & Vicy), one turtle (Joãozinho) and two birds (Flor & Martin) and love them all. Prior to my new dog’s adoption, my sister and I would often go and visit the animals that were crated outside Petco and up for adoption by their foster families. The past three weekends of April we had gone to look around and tease ourselves with the thought of a new dog, we had met a sweet Jack Russell. Now, sweet she was affectionate, well-tempered, and lovely, but as we say in my house, she was a “hot mess”. Rosie, our ten-month old Wheaten Terrier puppy, is our first “real” dog. I catch a glimpse of her out of the corner of my eye and become immediately distracted. Rosie sleeps in the most contorted positions, bracing herself against the closest object(s), frequently on her back with legs heading in one direction while the head in a completely different one. What my dog has taught me Humans are basically social animals, and in learning to coexist more peacefully, our pets could teach us a thing or two. Humans are sometimes arrogant enough to believe that our lives matter more than others, but in owning a dog it 's clear to see why it doesn 't.
