Personal Narrative: My Disturbing Whistler's Mountain

Improved Essays
On a day to day basis, it becomes easy to simply fall into routine and monotony like a cog in a machine. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had opportunities in my life to reconnect with nature and rediscover the freedom and expansiveness associated with it.
I must have seen the same old roads and buildings and restaurants of my medium sized suburb a thousand times in my life. However, no experiences have been more memorable and impactful than climbing Whistlers Mountain, or the meditative silence of the Negev, or the tremendous expanse of the Pacific. These memories still remain in the back of mind like posters lining its walls. There is an almost primal sense of accomplishment I get from remembering my journeys and explorations

When Mountain House High School was inaugurated, it lacked one of the most crucial elements of the high school experience: clubs. Eager to share my passion for business, I founded DECA to give members exposure to real world working environments, state conferences, and opportunities to present their knowledge. Success was easy to obtain as post-conference enthusiasm spread first amongst members and then the rest of the school. Because of the first year’s success, the next brought many new members who were all eager to attend the DECA state conference.…

We went to Kings Dominion yesterday and it was really fun. I’m scared of height, so I never really ride anything, but yesterday my friends force me on the Domination ride, it was one of those big roller coasters. I keep on telling them I can’t ride it and I’m really scared, but everybody just ignores me while they dragged by my arms and the other pushes me from behind to get on. Once we got down, they asked how was it…

As a new challenge comes my way I have learned to welcome it with an open mind to get the most of the experience. As days passed by in Lake Placid, hours upon hours seem to accumulate into a prime opportunity to explore. Going on hikes, canoe rides, and long walks, I was able to channel a sense of self that is otherwise difficult to obtain during the school year. This sense of self has grounded me and has helped form my values and daily state…

Just taking just an hour out of your time to appreciate the beauty of nature and not technology, will grant you a better taste of the instinctual and subconscious minds. Nature is an amazing thing and should be experienced as much as we can. When outside, people tend to notice little things, like how beautiful the planet is with all of it’s magnificent glory. Some people just need a break from the social busy world, well that's where nature comes in. Escaping to nature has always been a great way for me to just be carefree.…

Many young people begin to set out on self-reliant quests in nature where they believe they can find themselves. These “quests” are often times extremely dangerous and can even end in death for the person who does it. In the book Walden, Henry David Thoreau explains the benefits of living a simple life. He also states that people have two selves, one wild and one civilized, and that in order to have a healthy mind, one must observe nature in solitude.…

In a world of cars, highways, and skyscrapers, it can be difficult to see how much nature matters and affects our lives. For me, nature has always been an incredible place to go to get to know myself better and learn to appreciate the little things in life. A BWCA Wilderness canoe-camping adventure with my friends would be an amazing opportunity to grow as a person, spend time in my favorite place, and make lifelong memories with my friends. My past experiences in Boundary Waters have drastically changed my life by teaching me lessons about myself and the world around me.…

There isn’t anything more breathtaking than going Up North. If you’re not from Michigan you might be wondering, “Where up north?” In Michigan we use “up north” as a term for the upper half of the mitten, I’d say from the top of the thumb up. The UP (Upper Peninsula) can be considered Up North but normally it's just the UP.…

Living and existing are two distinct actions. To use all available senses and appreciate the value of a constructed reality is perhaps one of the most difficult tasks humans face on a daily basis. Details become insignificant and a person may ignore the grand scope of their environment for the sake of following his or her routine. To only prioritize routine and ignore the details of one’s surroundings is to have a limited grid of interest, or a narrow sense of self-awareness in the space one inhabits That is simply existing, but there are individuals who truly do marvel at simplicity and do not yearn for a more ‘interesting’ place. Alain de Botton describes the importance of interacting with all aspects of one’s surroundings and breaking habits in his essay, “On Habit,” to find personal happiness.…
