Personal Narrative: My Diaphragm

Decent Essays
I have always had a very concrete way of viewing myself and the world around me. I know that my diaphragm moves up and down during the process of breathing, and I know that when I inhale, my lungs expand, and when I exhale, my lungs contract. I know that a positive buoyancy causes an object to float, and I know that the transfer of energy from the wind to the water on an ocean shore causes waves. These concepts are tangible, but connecting them together like pieces of a puzzle makes the idea abstract. This class opened my eyes to one of many connections between my body and the earth.
The main connection I drew from today’s class was the idea that my breaths are similar to the waves of an ocean. This concept resonated with me even after I left

What does your heart say? We as people do everything that someone say we should do instead of what our heart say is right. “Tuck and roll” that’s what they say when jumping off or out of a moving vehicle but that didn’t work for me. I was about five years old, I was visiting my grandparents that I hadn’t seen in a while. I was riding with my dad on a four wheeler and I was having fun until I felt the four wheeler jump, and then I turned around to see my dad jumping off. That was when I got scared. I tried to drive it, but with my family, chasing and yelling for me to jump off it was hard to do.…

My “battle buddy” had received an injury one evening, which required a lengthy evaluation by the senior staff. Being her battle buddy, I stayed with her late into the night until the staff concluded that she needed to be brought to the hospital. Because it was required that one of the cadets -- someone her own age -- go with her, I quickly had to choose whether I wanted to wake up the cadet staff or jeopardize my chance of earning that award by missing crucial opportunities the next morning. Between the choices of what was morally right and what was selfishly ideal, I chose what was morally right. I did not want to take essential rest away from the cadre, nor did I want to leave my peer for the sake of my own self interest.…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

When I was growing up and my brother attended high school, I always enjoyed going to Friday night football games and watching the best part of the game: the halftime show. While I sat in the stands, my brother would be marching sets, creating intricate formations and blasting his trumpet at fortissimo. I dreamed to be a part of the sets of formations and play difficult music at rapid tempos. Once I entered middle school, I immediately signed up for band and assigned to play the oboe, a woodwind instrument in the double reed family and, arguably, one of the most difficult instruments to master. I didn’t know then, but I later found out that this activity would push me out of my comfort zone and learn not only challenging sonatas and melodies, but also life skills I would need to achieve my goals.…

I took two classes for the summer of 2016, but the Interpersonal Communication class had me worried the most. I had a training with the army, and that required me to absence from school for two weeks. Unlike my other class, I didn’t have a chance to work ahead of the class with the instructor for the two weeks that I would be missing. Therefore, I was worried that I wouldn’t catch up with my classmates and end up failing the class. However, Ms. Anna was generous and extended the assignment due date for me; she even gave me an extra-credit assignment to replace the credits that I missed during my two weeks in training.…
