Personal Narrative: My Degree At Northeastern Illinois University

Decent Essays
I’m currently a sophomore at Northeastern Illinois University. When I first started college I expected it to be full of new experiences and I was right. I was a little nervous about my classes, but I learned that time management is what’s most important in college. I went from writing short essays my freshman year to writing an eleven page research paper just last semester. I also realized that I enjoy writing. I enjoy learning about different concepts and breaking them apart. I’m amazed by new things that I learned such as concepts that are related to my major. I strongly believe that these two years of college have prepared me for challenges that will come my way. As far as how I am as a person I would say that I have goals for myself.

The first step to my seeking of independence was turning 16 years old and getting my driver’s license. This meant I was finally able to go out on my own and not rely on others to take me places anymore. In the year of 2016, I also began taking classes at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute to earn college credits.…

Transitioning occurs in all stages of life whether it’s from a baby crawling to walking, or an elder moving from their home to a retirement facility. One transition in life that most of us face is the evolution from high school to a college or a university. With moving into a new phase of my life I was optimistic about the difficulties of becoming comfortable with the population, the diversity, and the college life in general that Wayne State provides. I made the leap to a big city called Detroit from a small city called my home. I live in a small urban city, downriver, called Wyandotte.…

I started attending Lone star college right after high school, at first, I began with the typical high school graduate state of mind, which was that college was going to be a breeze and that it would all be fun and games; more worried about what was going on in my social life rather than studying the books. Especially since I had no real responsibilities to handle or much life experience. Around my first year of college, I started dating this girl and not long after we conceived our first son. Once this happened, my focus slowly shifted from school to working a full-time job at a welding shop in order to provide for my family. I still tried to attend class but was unable to find the balance between work, school and family and this reflected my grades.…

It was the twenty-third of October in the year of 2014 at exactly 2:15 P.M. the day was so far very beautiful as I went to Lamar’s University’s Geology building in room 101. When I walked in, it looked like a lecture room that I would have expected to see most of my college life. It bolstered my anxiety for college to new heights as I became worried about my future; I prayed that this presentation that Dr. Beth Anderson was doing would help me feel positive or “Thinking Optimistically” for my life here at Lamar University. By the time, I had found a place to sit in the lecture room, which had rows of seats in front of me that were in what I call “Stairwell Formation,” the lecture rooms doors began to close. This gave me the signal that the presentation was about to begin, as I waited to see what was going to happen next I looked around the room to see who the rest of the audience was.…

“Well, it’s nerdy, but in the best way possible,” tends to be my response when people ask why I want to go to Northwestern. That answer, however, doesn’t truly do justice in understanding why I wish to be a wildcat. Being "nerdy in the best way possible" implies much more than stated. From the enthusiasm and optimism of students as well as the academic opportunities available, Northwestern is a prized school.…

My intellectual goal for my first year at WIU is to become a more avid studier. In my last year of high school I could count on one hand how many times I took my bookbag home to do homework. Studying and staying on top of my tasks has never been my strong suits because I get distracted very easily by my phone, music, TV, people in the room trying to talk to me, or just genuinely being lazy when it comes to my school work. But it is my goal to change that this year at WIU. I plan to study or do homework every day and weekends when needed, after I get done with class dedicating as much time needed to finish all my assignments, especially for Math-099 and English-120, to achieve my goal of a 3.4 or higher GPA.…

When I have to get up for my 7:30 a.m. classes three times a week, sometimes I definitely question the sanity in why I chose the crazy schedule related to my Nursing major here at Purdue. Sometimes walking all the way back to my dorm room, especially in trepid conditions like snow, rain or the bitter cold, I question what I am doing here at Purdue. However, my greatest motivator and inspiration is my mother, who decided to go back to college and finish another degree two years ago. To say that my mother is an enthusiast about education would be an understatement: the truly incredible woman has several master’s degrees in finance … But about two years ago, my mother decided to return to school to achieve a masters degree in pastoral studies,…

I would like to first to introduce myself by saying that this is my second semester as a student here at California State University, Fresno. During my first semester I encountered many challenges that I did not expect. One of the challenges was commuting to school every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and if necessary Tuesday and Thursday. I come from a small town called Madera, California thirty minutes north from Fresno, California. It was difficult at times to drive to school because I had a morning class that started at eight and there were times were I woke up late and did not attend class.…
