Personal Narrative: My Definition Of Success

It’s Different

If you were to look up success in the dictionary you would find that, success is “1. the accomplishment of an aim or purpose 2. a person or thing that achieves desired aims attains prosperity.” Yet we all seem to take the definition of the word a bit differently, what might be considered successful to a six year old will vary from what it means to a 17 year old. Malcolm Gladwell, author of the book “Outliers”, defines success based on the facts of when you born, where you grew up, and what language you speak. I was still sick, this was the first individual race i had ever swam in, and I was in the sixth lane, which is one of the worst lanes to be in. As I put on my cap and goggles I started to pray for the intersection of St. Sebastian, he is the patron saint of athletes, I don’t even know how many hail marys I said, I felt at ease once I stepped up to the line! When the announcer introduced my to the crowd I smiled and waved, and then started to get into the zone. “SWIMMERS UP! TAKE YOUR MARK! BOOM!” we were off I was swimming harder than I had all season, I counted every stroke and breath. I slipped on the wall when I did my flip turn, but I kept on swimming hard. Half way back my muscles were burning and my thoughts started to think “Michael Phelps, Michael Phelps, come on swim like Michael Phelps!” I reached and hit the wall with a time of 38 seconds! I got third which means I medaled! I took home a bronze medal that day, I had gone from sixth place to third place. I went home feeling achieved! I can relate to the poem, “ Success is counted sweetest” by Emily Dickinson. Katie Ledecky and I share one major thing in common, we both rely on our Catholic faith when we are put into stressful situations. Ledecky says that she utters a few prayers before her races (Calunod). We both had faith that God would take of us and the situation at hand. Even if you don’t go to church you can still have faith in yourself to reach your

I think success is something entirely different. A teacher enriching the lives of countless students can be a success. A bank teller can be a success. Contrary to societal beliefs, you do not have to be a household name in order to be considered successful. Success is not having riches and fame; it is a piece of mind from doing what you love and doing your best at it.…

Because the ninth graders were not allowed to run in this strictly middle school race, I was among the oldest in the group. This was the meet that our team had been preparing for since the beginning of the season, and I prepared even more intensely in the past few days. I had been hydrating well, eating the right foods, and even skipped swim practice the day before to rest my muscles before the meet. This had been the moment that I had been preparing for, and made sacrifices for, and doing well felt like the only option. The pressure was swallowing me up, and pulling me back to the…

Great Success Success is the lofty idea of accomplishing some type of task that can make someone feel extraordinary. Everyone can think back to a time where they experienced some success, whether it is closing a major business deal or as simple as helping someone out. The concept of success morphs from person to person, but most people can agree the dictionary definition misses the true essence, the idea of success evolves as a person does, and true success is related to morals. The definition of success and the average person’s perception of success can be very similar and slightly deceiving. The Webster’s definition of success is, the attainment of popularity or profit.…

I began to spend more time worrying about my performance than actually trying to improve it. Before I knew it, I had slipped into a hole of swim season depression. I counted the days until it was over. Despite my best efforts to avoid the butterfly stroke, my coach really seemed to think I had a natural talent for it. Naturally, the team’s butterflyer quit and I was chosen to replace her in the one hundred yard butterfly: arguably one of the most hated races in the swim world.…

I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. One of the earliest lessons swimming taught me was to never give up. When I was 9, swimming taught me to fight the fatigue during lap two of a race. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…
