A time when I resisted accepting reality and kept focusing on my unattainable desire was when my sister decided to move to D.C. The news that my sister decided to move baffled me because I always thought I would be the first to move away. Before my sister moved away I was in denial. Even though my sister planned to move away my mind kept focusing on ways to keep her to stay. I kept attempting to keep my sister in Michigan by showing her places she would miss if she left. One of the biggest personal challenges I faced was before I moved back to Lawrence I lived in a rural small town on the frontier of Kansas and Oklahoma. I was in Junior high school at the time and the town was very traditional and old-fashioned and having a new student at the time was very seldom to occur. I soon found myself being verbally and even sometimes physically attacked for being the only Native American student in the school district and that was so troubling to me just because I was just trying to get my education to better myself and make friends. My reaction at the time to the event was turning to one of my favorite teachers, he helped me confront the bullies and helped me through my troublesome time. The way he treated me was…

My series of rather challenging events seven years ago, when my family moved from Myanmar to the United States. I had just turned nine when my sister received news that she was accepted into UC Berkeley. My whole family was ecstatic as we prepared for our move to San Francisco. People tried to explain to me what it would be like to live on the other side of the ocean. Little did I know, San Francisco and Yangon were polar opposites - one a bustling, concrete city and the other a quiet, somber town.…

Living in Olathe, Kansas, a large suburb outside of Kansas City, did not prepare me for the move to Salina. The benefits of living in a larger suburb are that the high schools can really help you prepare for the transition to college level classes. My senior year was when everything clicked into place and I knew what I want to do with my life, and that was flying.…
