Personal Narrative: My Deafness Simulation

Improved Essays
I. What I Did For my deafness simulation, since I was home for the weekend, I decided to go to the bowling alley with three of my friends, Nathan, Gabby, and Sierra. This is a common thing we do since it's inexpensive and one of the few activities in public we can do in a small town. I told my friends that I was going to be doing a deafness simulation and they were more than willing to help me with my assignment. My friend Nathan knows some basic sign language because he took a class on it when he was in middle school so we could hold a basic conversation and he could help translate some things for me if he needed to.
II. My Experience My experience started with my friends picking me up from my house, it was weird not being able to hear

Holcomb discusses the difference between being deaf and the Deaf community, and the difference between community and culture. He uses specific examples to show how Deaf culture adheres to all five hallmarks that make up a culture. In the third chapter, he defines many of the terms and labels used to describe deaf people, including hearing-impaired and hard of hearing. Everyone struggles to find their place in the world. Doesn’t matter if your deaf, hearing, blind, etc. Everyone wants to be in a place they feel safe and where they fit in.…

Through Deaf Eyes was an extremely enlightening documentary about deaf life in America. The film begins with the question, what do you think it would be like being a deaf person? They explain that, whenever you ask a hearing person this question they respond with a lot of “can’ts”. I can’t, I can’t I can’t. Deaf people, however, do not think like that, they think of all the things they can do.…

Before attending, my instructor warned that there is a vast difference between signing in a classroom setting and attempting to converse at “Deaf speed.” There is one particular Deaf chat that is seared in my memory. I was enrolled in the first section of American Sign Language and UCF and I ventured to a near-by restaurant for a Deaf chat hosted by the ASL Club. I approached a young male signer hoping that he would take pity on my novice skills.…

The Youtube video “Through Deaf Eyes’” is about how Deaf culture has changed in a positive manner throughout the years. It highlights special moments in Deaf culture, such as society attempting to teach Deaf people how to speak verbally, how Deaf people are no longer discriminated in today’s culture, and how technology has impacted the Deaf community. This documentary is a very educational video about the Deaf culture and how it has evolved. This video made me come to a realization of the Deaf Culture and how it has changed drastically over the years. In the 1800’s, Deaf people were completely misunderstood and were often seen as strange or mentally retarded (ASL IVC).…

Volunteer work can be an enriching and daunting experience, especially for those who need to settle into a new situation. Through my interaction with individuals in a long-term care facility, I have gotten to observe from a different perspective. As a Certified Nurse Assistant, you have a job to do which unfortunately only allows for one to show so much empathy, while still remaining professional. Being able to step back, and interact with individuals helps in developing a better transactional communication, as in, what we do with others. All while partaking in conversations working through both internal, and external noise we encounter in one’s interpersonal communication through shared environments (Adler &Proctor, 2015, p. 12).…

A Deaf Event I took an American Sign Language class last semester, Fall2014 at San Bernardino Valley College. The teacher had us choose an event to attend for a quiz grade. She had given us many events to choose from. The one I chose was Barnes and Noble “ASL story signing.” I had chosen this event because it was the only one that worked with my schedule and also because the story signing was being told by deaf/hearing impaired children.…

Community, acceptance, pride and early linguistic intervention are the key issues that I found during my reading of Deaf Again. Our author’s experiences at Gallaudet University and the PSD finally gave him the feeling of existing and community. For the first time, he craved challenges and joined organizations because he did not feel left out. Drolsbaugh has now learned how to live life and was a big advocate of deaf children having every opportunity to interact with others like themselves. Without this exposure, Mark Drolsbaugh felt emotionally and cognitively much younger than his chronological age as compared to his hearing counterparts.…

The seven senses – sight, smell, taste, hearing, touch, proprioception, and veromal – are invaluable to my performance in life. Some are necessary for basic function, and others are particularly enjoyable to have. The decision to lose or keep a certain sense is extremely arduous, as there are minute aspects of the senses that contribute to my everyday life in manners I do not notice. However, upon introspection, I was able to resolve the senses that I believed to be most and least imperative in my life.…

Growing up in an environment where I was different than the rest, looking back I realize I for the most part used powerless nonverbals. I do not think I felt powerless,I just did not feel comfortable which made me want to stay to myself. As I got into highschool and became familiar with a lot the students, I realized I began opening myself up. While in class I still remain to myself and around friends I am more open. Like Amy Cuddy mentioned, I sit openly, sprawled out, and even if I do not know what my friends are talking about I show confidence in my answers.…

The relationship I chose to analyze for my interpersonal communication paper was the relationship I had with my ex-girlfriend Laura. We met in high school through mutual friends and we dated throughout my junior and senior years. Communication problems and trust issues eventually were too big of a barrier to knock down and our relationship ended there. The main concepts I chose to analyze about my previous relationship were Personal Language, Nonverbal Communication, Proximity, the Social Penetration Theory, and lastly Relationship Threats. Personal Language shows your true self and is how you express your individuality and it is also more common in a private setting.…

Words, sounds and images trigger our thoughts and emotions. We create worlds within our mind when we feel both negative and positive feelings. Sometimes, we don’t have to feel anything to become lost in our thoughts. To be honest, I would fall in and out of my thoughts as if I walked into another room without knowing. For example, if I were to listen to some slow sad music my mind will create a scenario no wait, it’ll be more like my mind would create the climax of a movie scene where the main protagonist lost someone that meant the whole world to them.…
