Personal Narrative: My Dance

Improved Essays
This semester I was once again enrolled in DA 401. Over the course of this semester, I have worked conscientiously to improve my dancing through a concentration on various technical components. I feel like I was already more successful at some of these components than others, so I decided to focus on some of the other components that were more vital to my dancing and that I needed the most improvement in. Of the many technical aspects of ballet technique, I chose to focus on four – strength, flexibility, performance qualities, and risk. Success in each of these areas is important to being a technically advanced and well-rounded dancer, and I will continue to concentrate on these technical components in the pursuit of further advancing my ballet …show more content…
My goal this semester was to focus on using the correct muscles, such as the abdominals and the glutes, to execute movements and hold positions. In the past, I would overuse my psoas, causing inflammation in my hips and pain in my lower back. While I still do not have complete control of my core and may not always use the correct muscles, I think that I have gotten stronger in the correct areas. I now only experience this sort of pain off and on, and it usually is not as severe as it has been in the past. Like last semester, school has kept my schedule so full that I have not had the time to see my physical therapist regularly. I was able to visit her, however, during my spring break; she continued to work with me to teach me how to dance correctly and gave me stretches to help to release my psoas and hip flexors. I am pleased to have felt some relief this semester, and I will continue to work towards strengthening the correct …show more content…
Before coming to Brenau University, I had a tendency to dance plainly and even stiffly at times; now I feel like my dancing has a bit more personality to it. Over this semester, I have really been encouraged to be more expressive with my arms and head in ballet class, helping to enhance the amount of performance quality in my dancing. I think that having roles other than corps has especially helped with this. I felt that performing as Snow White allowed me to explore performing more of a character role, something that helped to push me to step out of my comfort zone. Still, like these other areas of evaluation, there can always be more. I think that I have improved in this area, but I would like to enhance my dancing even more by developing more artistry to add to my already established

This is happens when I’m not fully feeling what I’m doing. Feeling and understanding dance is what takes a dancer’s performance beyond simple execution of the movement. Feeling and understanding dance incorporates dynamics, musicality, and other internal and qualitative sensations that then translate into our external physical movement. Professor Comendador recently said that as dancers we each need to be a pop of color in our class; the way to do this is access our ability to play with dynamics and musicality. She suggested that many of us don’t access our full range of movement, which is what can cause our dancing to lack energy and seem bland.…

We are only friends. I press to that fact, but still my heart beats a hundred times faster as we dance together. We had spent quite some time choreographing this dance together and here we are: the steps running into a well-rehearsed picture, the artists are us. And though there is no audience, we dance as if there are a thousand watching our every movement.…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

As stated before in our first lecture, dance is a living and fleeting art form. I believe that dance is a living art form because it is a three-dimensional picture to art. What I mean by this is that, art is normally seen on walls or as sculptures, but dance is an amazing opportunity to view art while in movement. If you are anything like me, when I look at a painting of two people or many, I always wonder what it would be like to see them actually dancing, singing, or even laughing. By watching dance, it is my living art form.…

For the second half of this semester, I have had similar struggles as the beginning of the semester - although I have improved in some areas. As in the beginning of the semester, I have had my struggles with musicality and counting. However, I have improved in some areas such as my spot while turning. Although my athleticism has increased this semester, I have struggled with my flexibility – a situation I have found frustrating because, prior to college, my flexibility was much better. My areas of struggle and improvement in the second half of this semester as detailed in the following paragraphs.…

“Blood, sweat, and chalk; never tears.” These words have guided my gymnastics career throughout high school. Pretty much starting from the beginning, I had to re-learn many skills and tricks that I had lost after quitting gymnastics for dance lessons in fifth grade instead of joining the competitive team. I lived for gymnastics and I still do. Walking into the gym always boosts my mood and gives me a rush of determination.…

1 As a dancer for 15 years, I’ve had a lot of exceptional days within my training, but there has also been some miserable days as well. Although there have been periods where I wanted to break-down and quit, there has always been something that brings me back to dance. Dance has been around since the beginning of time and has been preserved and continued throughout history. It evolves and changes all the time, but the concepts and rudiments are still present. Why is it that dance has been able to stand the tests of time, maintain its influence throughout history, and personally allowed myself to stay committed and invested, even when my motivation is little to none?…

Starting fall semester of my junior year in Modern III, I knew that I would be challenged in several ways including: pushing my limits further, taking huge risks for myself, and learning choreography at a faster pace. So far in modern this semester, I feel that I have succeeded in these certain areas. I have experienced news things with my body by finding new places that my body could reach as well as surprising myself with things my body hasn’t ever experienced before. At the end of August, I set a few goals for myself that included: taking more risks, reaching to my fullest kinesphere and really performing the phrase, and focusing on getting my pelvis underneath me when getting in and out of the floor. When setting these goals for myself,…
